Knowhow refers to practical knowledge about how to do something, which can be hugely valuable. Knowhow might encompass material which could go on to be protected by IP, such as a patentable invention before the patent application has been made. Knowhow might also be something entirely separate from IP rights, such as the competitive advantage inherent in having a more efficient business model than a competitor.
