Overall, build quality feels on a par with the P20 Pro, which is to say Huawei has clearly worked hard to ensure a high standard of fit and finish across every element of the P20’s form. Its glass and metal body is also equipped with IP53 certification, so while it isn’t technically as hardy against dust and water ingress as the Samsung Galaxy S9 or its bigger sibling, the P20 Pro, it can withstand the elements to a point. There’s a set of grilles along the bottom of the P20 Pro, situated either side of the USB-C slot that conceals one of two speakers and the microphone. Similarly to HTC’s Hi-Fi BoomSound arrangement, this downward-facing speaker handles most of the heavy lifting when you’re enjoying media. Collectively the Pro’s audio capabilities are respectable; with clean, clear, powerful sound (for a smartphone) that only breaks down at the upper limits of its range. Look in Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile data or Data usage and make sure that Data saver is off. There are software improvements to the camera as well, including “AI” image stabilisation, which allows you to shoot four-second long exposure images with little handshake or blur. It’s a technique that works surprisingly well, with the phone capturing detail-rich images in low-light, without too much visual noise. The Huawei P20 Pro's camera is an interesting jigsaw puzzle of technology. But are its actual, normal images any good?
