About this deal

The plot and characters were so well developed. It had so many twists and turns. It was a little predictable in that it's a modern day version of The Count of Monte Cristo, but it was done in such an interesting way I didn't mind. And it's even better than the original classic, if that's possible. Yes," Beth repeated, hoping he'd stand up before everyone in the room stopped eating and turned to stare at them. But he didn't budge. Danny remained on one knee, and like a conjurer, produced a tiny box from nowhere. He opened it to reveal a simple gold band boasting a single diamond that was far larger than Beth had expected—although her brother had already told her that Danny had spent two months' wages on the ring. They are both oaks, even if they were planted in different forests. But then, m’lord, we all suffer in our different ways from being prisoners of birth. When Beth and Danny strolled into the Dunlop Arms, they found Bernie seated at a corner table with a bottle of champagne and three glasses by his side.

However, Spencer Craig, Lawrence Davenport, Gerald Payne, and Toby Mortimer all underestimate Danny's determination to seek revenge, and Beth's relentless quest to pursue justice, which ends up with all four fighting for their lives.Jeffrey Archer is at his best when he writes about individuals in seemingly impossible situations. He portrays a realistic world of courtrooms, prisons, high society and Swiss financial institutions; his experiences as a member of the British Parliament and the House of Lords, as well as his own two years in prison, layer his novels with realistic details. Archer is well known for his international bestselling novels and short story collections, including Kane and Abel, Sons of Fortune, and False Impression. He writes with skill and imagination, unafraid to raise controversial issues such as prison life, fraud, revenge, and the corruption of the legal profession. Above all, Archer knows how to keep reader on the edge of our seats, right up to a heart-stopping surprise in the very last word of A Prisoner of Birth . I've already phoned Mum and Dad," said Bernie as he popped the cork and filled the three champagne glasses. "They didn't seem all that surprised, but then it was the worst-kept secret in Bow." And if you think I'm gonna call you guv when you take over from my old man," said Bernie, breaking into his thoughts, "you can forget it." Danny didn't comment. At the end of the day, I enjoyed the cast of supporting characters: Big Al, Alex Redmayne’s father; rt. Hon. Sir Matthew Redmayne KCMG QC, who handles Danny’s case in the end…and ofcourse, the wise Scottish solicitor Mr.Fraser Munro. Beth flagged down the cabbie as the man Bernie had felled staggered past her and disappeared into the night.

A murder attempt goes wrong, killing Nicholas, which gives Danny the chance to escape prison in the guise of soon-to-be-released Sir Nicholas Moncrieff. From there begins Danny’s journey for revenge and redemption. urn:lcp:prisonerofbirth0000arch_f1c2:epub:5b99cb98-d7f9-45ec-a61b-6eba3258ec4e Foldoutcount 0 Identifier prisonerofbirth0000arch_f1c2 Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t57f4ts50 Invoice 1652 Isbn 9780330464062 However, Spencer Craig, Lawrence Davenport, Gerald Payne, and Toby Mortimer all underestimate Danny’s determination to seek revenge, and Beth’s relentless quest to pursue justice, which ends up with all four fighting for their lives, As a friend very rightly put it… ’A Prisoner of Birth’ has all the makings of a Bollywood Masala Movie.

He'd better have, 'cause gettin' spliced don't come cheap," said Bernie. "To start with, where you goin' to live?" A few hours later Danny is arrested for murder and later is sentenced to twenty-two years in prison, thanks to irrefutable testimony from Spencer, the prosecution's main witness. Danny frowned. He had been to see Beth's father during his lunch break and had asked for permission to marry his daughter—some traditions die hard in the East End. Mr. Wilson couldn't have been more enthusiastic about Danny becoming his son-in-law, but went on to tell him that he had changed his mind about something Danny thought they'd already agreed on. The cabbie glanced over her shoulder and down the alley. "I don't think it's a taxi they'll be needing, luv," he said. "If they were my friends, I'd be phoning for an ambulance." The language is simple and yet it is brilliant in that, it takes your breath away. Whenever I think of this book, there is always one quote from it that always comes to my mind: “We all suffer in our own different ways from being prisoners of birth”.

She said yes!" Danny announced triumphantly. Beth smiled as she held the diamond under the light and took a closer look. "Why don't you join us?" Danny added before she could stop him. "Great, let's meet at that wine bar off the Fulham Road—the one we went to after the Chelsea game last year. See you there, mate." For me, among all of those, A Prisoner of Birth is one of the best, maybe comparable to those works by Le Carre and Fleming. Archer is definitely better than Flynn, Ludlum and Grisham. Archer is said to be the British equivalent of the American Grisham. I do not agree with this. For me, Archer is better than Grisham. I want to leave," said Beth firmly. "I don't need a bunch of public-school snobs ruining my engagement party." To hell with that," said Bernie. "It's not every day that my little sister gets engaged to my best mate. Another bottle!" he shouted. We've saved enough between us to put down a deposit," said Beth, "and when Danny takes over from Dad—" A Prisoner of Birth is, basically, a retelling of Alexandre Dumas’s “The Count of Monte Cristo”. However, whether you have read that classic or not, you are bound to enjoy Archer’s version. Every character in the book is portrayed beautifully and they are bound to stay with you long after you have finished reading it. Not even once would you feel bored or want to skip any part of the book. And when the four prosecution witnesses are a barrister, a popular actor, an aristocrat and the youngest partner in an established firm’s history, who is going to believe his side of the story?

I can't wait to start another one of Jeffrey Archer's masterpieces. I thought his modern version of Cain and Abel was good, but this takes it to another level. He is not recognized enough for how smart, modern, humorous, and witty his writing is. When Danny finally got off his knee, he took her by surprise again. He immediately began to tap a number on his mobile. Beth knew only too well who would be on the other end of the line. But have you got enough readies?" demanded Bernie. "'Cause basement flats don't come cheap, even in the East End."
