In the senior high school division of Shuchiin Academy, student council president Miyuki Shirogane and vice president Kaguya Shinomiya appear to be a perfect match. Kaguya is the daughter of a wealthy conglomerate family, and Miyuki is the top student at the school and well known across the prefecture. Although they like each other, they are too proud to confess their love, as they believe whoever does so first would "lose" in their relationship. The story follows their many schemes to make the other one confess or at least show signs of affection. After hearing Yu describe men who wear boxers as "man whores", Kaguya attempts to see Miyuki's underwear. Kaguya offers to give Miyuki a hand massage as an apology for the underwear misunderstanding, but she also has ulterior motives to increase his sexual interest in her. Miyuki, Yu, and Chika read an especially emotional shōjo manga and try to convince Kaguya to do the same. When Kaguya reads the manga, the Student Council room becomes a shōjo-like, love-filled environment as Miyuki and Yu attempt to invite her to the aquarium. On Election Day, Kobachi and Kaguya give their candidates' speeches, during which Miko realizes she is outmatched. When Miko begins to falter due to the large crowd watching, Miyuki steps in and inspires her to start a debate. Miyuki eventually wins re-election and invites Miko to join the Student Council, while Kaguya worries that she might not be selected as vice president due to her actions during the election until Miyuki re-offers her the position. Aka Akasaka is somewhat of a new author in the manga world. Prior to this series, their only work I was familiar with is Sayonara Piano Sonata. When Kaguya-sama began serializing, I knew there was something special about this series with the way it introduced its story Every season there is one entry the anime community overhypes beyond belief and this time it's Kaguya sama. Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War, Chapter 189: Kaguya Shinomiya’s Impossible Challenge: “the Buddha’s Stone Begging Bowl” As with many rom-coms, it needs to have male characters that aren’t just alpha males like Shirogane. This is where Yu Ishigami comes in. Having an inferiority complex, he doesn’t have nearly as much as pride in himself as Shirogane. Unlike him, Ishigami isn’t a real genius but he tries hard in things that interests him. The more I watched his character interactions, the more I realized how real he is compared to the others. He can be rather relatable for his social status and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the anime needed someone like him too. That being said, outside of these characters, there’s only a small handful that gets spotlights such as Shirogane’s sister. There are occasional side characters that reinforces the themes of love in the show but these often don’t greatly influence the show’s plot. With everything being said, I think watching Kaguya-sama takes an open mind to accept what this show offers while also enjoying what you may not often find in rom-coms.Comic Natalie (in Japanese).
