About this deal

When considering the size of your bird feeding table, the first place to start is always the size of your outdoor space. If your garden is relatively small, or you have an enclosed yard, then often, the choice is made for you. Go for the one that best fits the space. Under Ian’s leadership, we achieved a number of industry firsts. For example, in the mid-70s, we became the first company to ship peas and canary seed in bulk containers from New Zealand and Australia. Cuttlefish bone is the internal shell of a cuttlefish and it is made up of around 85 per cent calcium carbonate. It is a great source of calcium and other minerals for your parrot that not only helps keep bones healthy, but also ensures the blood clots properly.

The final link in the chain for ensuring your parrot is properly fed, and therefore increasing their chances of living a long, healthy, happy life, is clean drinking water. Not all woods are made equal though and it is essential you choose a wooden bird table made from sustainably sourced timber. All the timber used to make our wooden items is FSC®-certified, ensuring we always source from the most sustainable supplies. Quality Another important type of enrichment is foraging. In the wild, parrots often spend several hours a day foraging, so it is a very natural behaviour for them to exhibit. Combining foraging toys with treats – pine nuts are a particular favourite, or pieces of their favourite fruit and veg – can keep parrots engaged and entertained for hours. Romaine lettuce is actually a bit of a parrot super-food. It contains significant amounts of folic acid; a water-soluble form of vitamin B. It is 17 per cent protein and contains all nine essential amino acids and has far more vitamin A than carrots. So, a leaf or two of romaine lettuce goes along way!But worry not! We’ve been making premium wild bird foods and British-made wooden bird tables for more years than we care to remember, so we’ve learned a thing or two in that time.

Sprouting seeds, beans or pulses are also a good source of protein and due to biological changes brought about by sprouting. They also provide plenty of enzymes and vitamins. For more information take a look at our mix, Seed for Soaking. Seeds and Nuts Richard Hunter Jeff had already retired before this and with no family interest in the business, he sold his shares to George, ending the involvement of the Jeff family in the business. WWII – Disasters Strikes was our centenary – 100 magnificent years of producing the cleanest and most nutritious bird food on the market. In 1986, Alan’s son, Richard Johnston, joined the business to become the fourth generation of the Johnston family to do so. So, it is no surprise that ‘what do parrots eat’ and ‘what do Parakeets eat’ are among the most common questions we get asked. This is a good thing because we owe it to our treasured companions to ensure we do get it right. years later, just before the turn of the century, Richard succeeded Alan as managing director. 2001 – Disaster Strikes AgainIn autumn, give your tables a general overhaul and, if necessary, apply appropriate, bird-friendly, non-toxic treatment. Deep clean them and make sure all screws, nuts and bolts are tight as we head towards the colder, wetter, windier time of the year. Leafy greens, including spinach, kale, dandelion and mustard greens, Swiss chard, and romaine lettuce are rich in omega 3 fatty acids which are needed to help keep your parrot’s skin and feathers in tip-top condition.

Like all creatures, birds want to feed in peace while at the same time, keeping an eye out for predators, so put your table somewhere quiet, but also with good visibility around all sides. Ensure it is not close to other garden items such as fences or anything that will enable cats to climb up and jump on to the table. During WWI, we continued to supply pulses and seeds, but due to the scarcity of food, this was turned over to human consumption.

Since 2015, we have been making major investments in equipment to ensure we can meet market demand efficiently. These include: In 2007, we began a long-term relationship with The Parrot Society UK to help to resurrect their flagship show, the National Exhibition Show.

Feeding fresh food as a supplement for a formulated parrot food is therefore not only good for your parrot’s physical health, but also for their mental health. Parrot Feeding Routine Bird tables come in a range of materials nowadays, but we’re traditionalists so there’s only one material for us – wood. The business was set up by George Gilchrist Johnston and Richard Hunter Jeff who, in the early days, specialised in selling peas to pigeon fanciers. However, George and Richard soon noticed that miners kept canaries too and spotted an opportunity to supply canary seed and millet seed. WWI – Food Scarcity Whether you’re looking for supplies to keep a pet bird healthy or you love nothing better than to sit in the garden and watch wildlife feasting on the wild bird seedand treats you provide, something from our range of Johnston & Jeff bird feedis sure to do the job.It is also essential to replace the water in your parrot’s enclosure every day. If this is not done, your beloved pet may defecate in it, bath in it, drop food into it, and anything else available in its enclosure. This is a harder question to answer because all parrots, regardless of species, are individuals and have their own preferences. Some will eat everything put in front of them straight away, others are like young children who push their food around the plate rather than eat it. Some will self-regulate, meaning food can be left out for them all the time, others will continue to eat throughout the day, possibly leading to obesity and other health conditions. As well as this regular clean, it is a good idea to give all your bird tables and feeders a more thorough clean at various points in the year. And continue trading we did! By the afternoon of the day the fire broke out, we’d found temporary premises in Hessle and were up and running. However, as with berries, feed fruit sparingly because they contain a lot of sugar. Also, if you don’t buy organic, it’s best to wash fruit and vegetables thoroughly to get rid of any residues.
