About this deal

Saying said this, the Insta360 is a more complete sports camera being able to record both 360º degree videos and the typical wide-angle sports cam videos. You can edit all your pictures and videos on the Insta360 app which works great, possibly the most complete. Instant Zoom allows us to digitally zoom in while recording up to 2.7x on a subject without the need to set up your shot in advance. The Insta360 One RS can shoot stills, but we wouldn’t recommend buying one for the job. Shooting feels quite slow, with a notable wait between each exposure as the camera processes/saves the files. It’s much like other action cameras in this respect.

Up to 50% faster WiFi transfers - makes transferring files wayyyy easier and vastly improves your editing time compared to the ONE R. In our initial test we were impressed by how easy the modules snapped together, and how stable they feel once they've been pushed onto the battery module. Not only do they fit together so easily, but the processor/touchscreen can be turned through 180º and snapped into place so that the subject can see what's going on. That ‘selfie mode’ will prove useful for anyone doing a piece to camera. Editing with the Insta360 app and Insta360 Studio desktop software also works in the same way for ONE RS and ONE R, with all the incredible AI-powered tools and templates. Compatibility Devices that do not meet the above requirements can possibly still use the app to control the camera, however, performance of some processor-intensive and AI-powered features may be sub-optimal.Streaming to Facebook works fine, provided your internet connection can handle it. The stream froze and lagged so much on my home network that it was unusable, but I had no issues when I later tried it using the WiFi at a WeWork in the middle of Sydney. The resolution certainly left something to be desired, as did the audio quality, and there was a significant delay. But the footage was smooth, and the 360 camera did let viewers look around. The last attempt had HDR, but the ONE RS adds Active HDR, which is uniquely designed for capturing sports and fast action outdoors (though not in low light conditions). This video mode retains details in highlights and shadows and boosts colour, but also adds some FlowState Stabilization. As is the case with most gadgets these days, a good swath of the Insta360 ONE RS's functionality is accessed via a dedicated app. I would not mourn if companies collectively decided we don't need an official app for every piece of tech we own, but in this case the small size of the ONE RS's onboard screen does make it more understandable. When using the ONE RS you can swipe left and right to toggle between the various modes. For photos there’s Standard, HDR, Interval, Night Shot, Starlapse, Burst, PureShot – with images in 16:9, 9:16 and now in 2.35:1 widescreen – while for video there’s Standard Video, Slow Motion, Active HDR, Timelapse, TimeShift, Loop Recording and 6K Widescreen. In terms of choosing between native 360 – where the viewer chooses the angle – and reframed, where you do, I think this depends on the intended usage. Most of the time, I think reframed makes sense, as most video viewing is passive, and most video creators want to choose what the viewers see (or don’t see).

The 4k ‘boost’ module also brings into play a new 6k cinematic video mode. In the interest of full transparency, the review unit and firmware I’ve been testing are very good, but pre-release versions.

Photography Comparison

With the 4K standard lens attached in the forward-facing position, the ONE RS looks fairly similar to a GoPro. The main distinguishing feature is the bright red battery base. Here you can see it with the 360-degree module alongside: The Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition can record 5.7K with the 360º lens and 4K at 60fps with the wide lens, for the photos it can shoot 48MP photos with the new 8:7 aspect ratio, it shoots using a 170° super wide-angle lens with an opening of F1.8. There is also a wealth of nifty and fun features in the Shot Lab that is updated regularly. New iterations like Ghost Town, Shadow Clone and Freeze Throw are the latest, but it’s unique to see how the app learns from its community of users and takes those lessons to automate them for all users. There are some neat features for the more serious video shooter, though. There’s a flat Log color mode for standard video shooting (as well as Vivid/Standard color modes). Insta360 provides easy access manual controls too. Just swipe right-to-left on the preview screen and you can set that color mode as well as shutter speed, ISO, exposure and white balance (note: only white balance is available in HDR video shooting). The 4k ‘Boost’ module has seen the biggest overhaul - certainly when comparing the 4k lens of its predecessor. The sensor has been overhauled to deliver better performance, improved shot quality and most impressively 48MP in still image mode.

You can do quite a bit with the free Insta360 Camera control app on your Android or iOS smartphone to capture and send, or publish on social media. The smartphone app has helpful step-by-step guides telling you how to get all the fancy final videos, though you don’t need to get fancy to memorialize the best moments of a ride, hike, or baby’s first birthday. I am no techie and produced these clips with just a few button pushes on my iPhone. The most unexpected in-app editing tool was the beauty filter, which definitely isn't a feature I expected to see on an action camera. Called Face Filter, you can have the Insta360 app apply it automatically, or manually adjust the toning and brightening yourself. But even the beauty filter's lowest setting was an aggressive change, noticeably reshaping my entire face to make my chin smaller, forehead bigger, and shifting my eyes farther apart. These alterations were applied even if I only used the brightening option and left the toning alone. So while the two may seem fairly evenly matched the reality is a bit different. While the Insta360 X3 single lens mode can shoot 4K standard video, due to the fact that the lens is a fish eye lens this video will appear slightly curved. To achieve a more linear looking video you’ll need to select an option that removes this curve. Doing so zooms into the video and reduced the quality slightly. This Insta360 One RS action camera requires almost no instruction to start recording immersive 360-degree videos, 360-degree stills, and wide-angle videos and stills. The small, easily navigable touchscreen or the app on your smartphone can be intuitively used for setting the myriad of capture modes. You can also control the camera from an Apple Watch. The X3 is fully waterproof to 10m and the larger touchscreen makes it overall more easy to use. Like the One RS the X3 can also be used as two different kinds of cameras. When using both lenses the X3 is a 360 camera but you can also go to single lens mode and shoot 4K “normal” video. I’ll show you some comparisons between both the 360 and flat video that these cameras can shoot later in this article. When out and about, the 360º module is protected by a U-shaped silicon hood when off the camera and by two snap-on lens caps when on the camera, which is good thinking.

When comparing side by side there is an obvious difference in quality with the 4K Boost Mod coming out on top. The first time I used it was when attending the opening of Apple Brompton Road, the fifth Apple Store in London, and the third flagship. Since I knew there would be plenty of standard video online, as half the people in the store were shooting with their iPhones, I opted to shoot 360-degree video to provide the most immersive experience possible. To truly bring action to life, the 4K Boost Lens has a groundbreaking Active HDR video mode. This captures action scenes with a high dynamic range, giving you improved details in the highlights and shadows for more vibrant footage. 48 Megapixel Photos

Judging from this showing, Insta360 is providing some more than decent competition for GoPro. The Resolution The advantage of this design is that you can switch between different lenses which allows you to have different types of camera in one setup. The One RS is waterproof up to 5m without a case so it can handle some underwater shots but don’t take it too deep. The Core Mod features a small touchscreen for manual control but the small size makes it difficult to change settings. Users can now take higher resolution videos with the 4K Boost lens, with a max of 6016 x 2560 at 25 FPS as compared to 4000 x 3000 at 30 FPS. Photo resolution has also gotten a boost, reaching up to 8000 x 6000 — twice the maximum resolution of the ONE R.
