Both smartwatches are built with Super AMOLED display for strength and durability. However, the Galaxy Watch5 models are among our strongest smartwatches, as they are designed with Sapphire Crystal Glass that allows you to continue your journey to a healthier you without worrying about damaging your watch.

However, aside from that, the experience here has been largely the same as that I enjoyed roughly a year ago with the Galaxy Watch 4. With even last year’s chipset making a return, there are no speed improvements to be found when using the software. The feature is available on Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro when paired with a Samsung Galaxy smartphone running One UI 5.1 or above. Requires installation of the latest software version via the Galaxy Wearable app. A Google heart in a Samsung body, the duality of Google's Wear OS and Samsung's interface extends far and wide. First, let's talk about voice assistants. The Watch 5 features Bixby, Samsung's own assistant by default, which works well once you're signed into your Samsung account. You can switch it out, however, to Google Assistant if you so choose after a deep dive into the settings, so a long press of the top button fires up the big G. Neutral at its core with highly customizable flourishes through Samsung's Bespoke service plus premium, hardy build quality. An Exynos W920 Dual-Core 1.18GHz chipset powers the smarts of the watch, which runs Wear OS 3.5 and Samsung’s OneUI Watch4.5. GPS connection is impressive, with multi-band Glonass, Beidou and Galileo. The watch carries 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of memory, plenty for your favorite tunes.

Both premium smartwatches have a round Super AMOLED display available up to 46mm. But the Galaxy Watch5 Pro truly stands the test of time with the built in Sapphire Crystal Glass. What’s more, the Galaxy Watch4 Classic has up to 40 hours usage time, whereas the Galaxy Watch5 Pro can last up to twice as long with up to 80 hours of usage. Galaxy Watch5 Pro has a water resistance rating of 50 meters under the ISO standard 22810:2010. It is not suitable for diving or high-pressure water activities. If the device or your hands are wet, they must be dried thoroughly prior to handling. You can uninstall these, but the first two in particular are overkill. Yes. Thanks to the power of O2 and 4G, you can leave your Galaxy smartphone at home with 4G connectivity for calls, texts and social media updates. And NFC lets you shop with Samsung Pay, so you can always swing by the smoothie bar after a workout. The Watch's BioActive sensor is instrumental in collecting data to monitor your workouts, sleep and stress levels, offering breathing exercise suggestions as well as suggested workouts and training plans for specific fitness goals. The Watch 5 Pro has the capacity to measure blood pressure and skin temperature, although these features are not yet available in some regions. Samsung states: "the blood pressure app has not yet been cleared by the US FDA and will not be available in the United States unless and until such clearance is received."

The Galaxy Watch5 must be paired with a Samsung Galaxy phone with Android 8.0 and minimum 1.5GB RAM. Likewise, sleep functionality monitors your snoring, time spent awake, in REM, light or deep sleep, and is more accurate than ever thanks to the BioActive Sensor. Once the watch has collected enough data, it provides you a sleep profile through which it can assign helpful “sleep missions” to improve your overall sleep score. As far as wearables are concerned, 2021 was a mixed bag. The market did see a new smartwatch that not only saw two major companies partner up (Samsung and Google), but it also signalled what could be on the horizon for the industry as a whole. The Galaxy Watch 4 was that device, and being one of only a handful of watches that actually carries Wear OS 3 (even at the time of this review), it remains an excellent smartwatch that’s easy to recommend. Again, the bright display really helps to sell the visual style of these watch faces, and there’s plenty of customisation on offer for adding complications and even tweaking the colour of the dials. They make an already great collection even better – with the exception of the AR Emoji watch face, which I can firmly say isn’t my cup of tea (and I’d be surprised if it was anyone else’s, either). The operating system is richer when it comes to apps and features than those of the semi-smartwatch competition like the Huawei GT 3, but you don't quite get the polish Apple's watchOS brings to the table. The GPS was also accurate, though the metric that was most at odds with our other tools was the bodyfat measurement. This isn't surprising – different mechanisms for measuring bodyfat generally generate different results. That said, if you just use the Watch 5, it sets a reliable starting point, even if it isn't as accurate as a caliper or full body measure.
