Next-Generation Beneficial Microbes: The Case of Akkermansia muciniphila. Front. Microbiol. 2017, 8, 1765. [ Google Scholar] [ CrossRef] Though Akkermansia muciniphila is now available as a probiotic, it is also essential to take advantage of dietary factors that support the growth of this bacteria. The suitable organisms in our microbiome are often already there; they need nourishment like a lawn needs the suitable soil and fertilizer. Dingemanse, C. et al. Research shows that the microbiome profoundly impacts various systems and plays crucial roles in digestive, immune, and mental health. An imbalance in the intestinal microbiome may lead to a wide range of issues, ranging from occasional symptoms of digestive distress like gas and bloating to broader systemic challenges such as obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, inflammation, etc. Guo, X. et al. Genome sequencing of 39 Akkermansia muciniphila isolates reveals its population structure, genomic and functional diverisity, and global distribution in mammalian gut microbiotas. Because we only discovered Akkermansia 15 years ago, research has really only just begun. If you need help to understand how boosting your levels of Akkermansia could help your health condition, and how best to do it, you can talk to a Functional Medicine Practitioner or Registered Nutritional Therapist. As a result, A. muciniphila has been shown to be more effective when it is dead vs. live. It is not alone in this effect; several lactic acid-producing probiotic organisms, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacter species, have also been effective when heat-killed. The effectiveness of these "zombie" or dead microbes is challenging the commercial dogma that the only effective probiotic bacteria live as expressed in colony-forming units (CFUs). That is not the case for A. muciniphila . What Makes Akkermansia muciniphila Important? A few studies suggest a direct effect of A. muciniphila on IECs. A linear discriminate analysis clearly shows the enrichment of A. muciniphila in the early regenerative mucosa of mice. The intrarectal administration of active A. muciniphila remarkably facilitate the closure of injured mucosa (from 43.7% to 74.14%) in mice by promoting the proliferation and migration of intestinal stem cells (ISCs) and accelerating the regeneration of the wound in SK-CO15 monolayers in vitro 110. This requires the participation of formyl peptide receptor 1 (FPR1) and neutrophilic NADPH oxidase (NOX1) to increase ROS in the wound edge and the phosphorylation of extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK) in colonic epithelial cells. In addition, the gavage of AmEVs isolated from A. muciniphila can alleviate dysplasia in C57BL/6 mice induced by 2% DSS 107. Amuc_1100 (3 μg) can also relieve the shortening of colon and the histological injuries in the proximal colon in mice with DSS-induced colitis 88, indicating an alleviation or even the repair of injured intestinal epithelium by A. muciniphila, or its derivatives.

But this isn’t entirely bad news. Research shows that in the quest for gut health, prebiotics are just as powerful as probiotics. While probiotics are live beneficial bacteria, prebiotics are the fertiliser for the bacteria you currently have. And as it appears that most of us already carry Akkermansia, it could be that all we need to do is feed them properly.
