Description

I find myself asking if the impressive “21” on the label is enough to justify such a large sum? No doubt it used to be but haven’t things moved on? Haven’t tastes evolved? Nowadays there are fantastic whiskies at just three years old and there are no-age-statement releases with such intensity and complexity that age almost seems irrelevant. I’m not advocating an end to age statements, only suggesting that they aren’t necessarily the attraction they once were. There are also various self-catered options, from small cottages to houses and steadings. The Old Pine Yurt is a more unique way that allows you to connect with nature.

As always, I will strive to give an honest opinion on the quality of the drams and the value for money they represent.

Palate: Medium bodied, although the flavor seems a too watered-down at 40%. Raw honey, again, complete with the comb. Toasted oats, slight wood, and not bitter. I mean sure, if you want the status symbol of an old single malt to show off to your friends whilst still having an easy drinking, sessionable whisky, Tomintoul fits the bill. I suspect, however, that many consumers nowadays would prefer something a little more characterful, a little more intense and they wouldn’t particularly care if that meant buying a much younger whisky. In the Victorian era, the village was receiving some tourism; in 1860, there were three inns here. [11] An 1857 Commercial Gazetteer described the community as a mean-looking village on a bleak moor with superstitious residents. [12] The 1882–4 Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer for Scotland also did not depict Tomintoul as a prosperous village: [13]

Something that is worth mentioning, however: Tomintoul is the proud employer of one of the Scotch whisky industry’s longest serving Master Distillers. Robert Fleming joined the company in 1990 and for more than thirty years he has guided the production of the distillery’s single malt, overseeing the creation of the entire current range of expressions. It’s an impressive stint by anyone’s The area around Tomintoul has both treeless moors and lush forests. It’s also diverse in the activities and adventures available across the local countryside. Taste: A par for the course 40% arrival – aiming purely to be ‘smooth’ and not necessarily to show off the distinctive character of the spirit itself. Vanilla flavoured cream alongside choux buns and oven-baked rolls – then a crisp and clean citrus with both peels and pith. The ex-bourbon casks come through in the development, offering gentle white pepper and toasted oak whilst marzipan and walnut nuttiness is supported by golden cereals and barley sugar.

Tomintoul 16YO has been matured in selected Ex-Bourbon American Oak casks. It’s been crafted by 4th generation distiller Robert Fleming. The Gentle Gunman Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. The Speyside distillery prides itself on the freshness of their ingredients and purity of their water. It is this combination that they claim makes their malt, in their words, “the gentle dram”. Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”).The village is on the famed Whisky Trail, which also includes Dufftown, Keith, Tomnavoulin, and Marypark. The surrounding countryside forms the Glenlivet Estate.

Piney, like sawn pine branches. Tart apples and spicy anisette. Quite floral, although I can’t place the flower. Deep in the glass is a suggestion of white peaches and raw honey.Thoughts: I was pleasantly surprised. In the past I’ve found Tomintoul to be a little lightweight and inoffensive. However, whilst this certainly isn’t the most robust dram I’ve ever come across, it’s more fully flavoured than I was anticipating. Maybe not the most complex but a nice, straight-forward single malt that’s perfectly poised between spirit and oak.
