The author gives authenticity to how deeply grief and hardship can impact one's life both physically and mentally. After Suki's disappearance, Olive's mother fears for her children's safety and evacuates them to Devon where they stay in a lighthouse. Even though Olive is in Devon, she is determined to find out what really happened to her sister. Olive is still convinced that she is still alive somewhere. Carefully structured in three sections (“The Window”; “Time Passes”; “The Lighthouse”), To the Lighthouse follows the shifting perspectives of each character—a narrative technique Woolf had experimented with in her previous books, Jacob’s Room and Mrs. Dalloway—as they grapple with themes such as time, loss, gender roles, and the purpose of art. It wasn’t even close to the construction of a classic novel, and it wasn’t meant to be.Amy is struggling to deal with the death of her mother. Her father, a police detective, is clueless about finding a way to connect with his daughter. The distance between them is growing farther, and there’s no one to fill it.

I think this was a good book for me to write a review on as I really enjoy reading war books; I have about 10 of them. I will definitely be looking out for more of Emma Carroll's books. Since its publication, readers have said the lighthouse symbolizes things like desire, stability, and truth. Woolf, however, didn’t assign any symbolism to the lighthouse herself. I enjoyed reading this book. I found the characters really interesting and there were some really exciting twists and turns but at times I found the plot a little bit confusing! I'm not sure if the history in the book was realistic as I think that Britain did allow refugees to come into the country in the second world war. I am already very interested in WW2. I would like to read more books by Emma Carrol and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers.Distraught at the state of Amy’s health, Kevin undertakes a missing person’s case in the distant town of Seabrook in the hopes that a change in scenery may lift Amy’s spirits, and hopefully bring he and Amy closer. Begrudgingly, Amy agrees to tag along on her dad’s assignment. Because anything was better than staying at home alone. I felt transported into World War II: the rushing when there was an air-raid siren, why some children wanted to be evacuated and why some children did not, living with rationing and experiencing different lifestyles once evacuated. My irritation over the suspects wasn't helped by the fact that Dalgliesh (a senior officer) is too sensitive by half. I've never particularly fond the idea of a poetry writing detective, but the more I read of him, the more I just want to yell "Get over yourself and get on with the crime bit of the story."

I found this latest installment in the Dalgliesh series rather cold and disjointed. James' usual skill at plotting is in evidence, but perhaps because I haven't read the two or three before this one, I found myself uninterested in the personal lives of most of the characters. The prose is always poetic in a particularly English reserved kind of way, but usually I find the people endearing, especially Adam and Kate. For some reason, in this book, I could not bring myself to care much what happened to their emotional lives.

Seabrook comes alive in this book, although set in the modern day, it captured the simplicity of life years ago. One of the main attractions in Seabrook is a lighthouse that has been broken for years, explained away through tales of hauntings of local spirits. During the first night of their stay, the lighthouse magically lights up after years of dormancy. It's a miracle! But even years after Mrs. Ramsay's death, Lily can capture her memory through art. Life is uncertain and fleeting, but the physical reminder of Mrs. Ramsay is much more permanent than Mrs. Ramsay herself. Creating art is Lily's way of bringing a sense of permanence to her own existence as she immortalizes her friends through her work.

Everything is nicely set up for an intriguing mystery, and sure enough the second half includes a secondary murder, and from then on escalates into a gripping drama. A long-forgotten mystery from history, a tale of betrayal and deep resentment, reveals the reasons for what happened. To pile on the suspense, one of the officers falls gravely ill, in itself a life-threatening risk in such a remote location. This character is unable to complete the work, although they are working out the puzzle in their mind. Another excels in a situation they have not experienced before. There is an extremely tense and exciting edge-of-the-seat scene towards the end, cleverly written by this experienced author. And we have a happy ending of an unexpected type. The historical information I have learnt from this book is that Jews were not given permission to evacuate to any country. Only some countries gave permission.
