About this deal

I hated this scene. HATED it. It's not funny or cute for Mio to kiss Shun's ex, and if he can get mad at Shun for it, then how does he not understand that it's cheating on his part, too? This review is for "Umibe no Étranger," I have yet to read the sequel "Harukaze no Étranger," but I will do so as soon as I can. I was left with a feeling of not just disappointment, but dissatisfaction, after "Umibe no Étranger," and strangely enough, I kind of really want to read "Harukaze no Étranger," to see how Kanna Kii handles the sequel and if the story writing possibly ends up changing for the better. The female characters in the story are obnoxious and are kinda just there to bring some meaningless drama.

I didn't love everything about this, but it is a really good manga. I agree with Sherry that the initial confession happened a bit too fast but considering it was initially supposed to be a short story that probably can't be helped. I liked the way they tried to navigate their relationship afterwards, and I liked that it didn't really matter who the seme or the uke was. I would've preferred if Mio wasn't "normally into girls", but at least Shun was gay and there was an actual lesbian couple. a b c d e Friedman, Nicholas (June 18, 2021). L'étranger de la Plage is written and illustrated by Kanna Kii, and it is her debut manga work. [1] It was serialized in the bimonthly manga anthology On BLUE from 2013 to 2014. The chapters were later released in one bound volume by Shodensha under the Feel Comics On BLUE imprint. The manga is distributed in English by Renta! under the title The Stranger by the Beach. [10] In December 2020, Seven Seas Entertainment announced that it had acquired the license to the series for release in July 2021 under the title Seaside Stranger: Umibe no Étranger. [11] With regards to change, it would hardly be an exaggeration to say that the younger and older Mios are effectively different people. From his temperament to his physical posture and body language, it’s clear that his time with Shun has dramatically impacted him. Shun, by contrast, remains much the same. That’s not to say that he comes across as a flat character without dimensions so much as his core flaws and anxieties remain relatively consistent across the span of the film. There are some mentions throughout of his difficult history with his family, and these add context to his actions although much remains subtle about the presentation. The film isn’t vague by any means; it certainly gives the viewer the bare minimum information needed— but little beyond it. Your mileage may vary on if this is executed effectively or if Shun’s character could have still used more fleshing out. There are a few nice scenes sprinkled in here and there, and I liked that there was a (totally underused) side lesbian couple. I thought it was interesting, too, that Shun's aunt took him and these other girls in, so she's obviously very cool with the LGBTQA+ community. That tiny supportive community reminded me a little bit of Our Dreams at Dusk: Shimanami Tasogare, Vol. 1....which really just put this manga's issues in perspective and made me even less satisfied with it. I've heard that the second volume is better, so maybe I'd try it again once that's out, but I just don't know. It doesn't seem worth it. Qu'il s'améliore et que relation père-fils s'arrange oui. Mais pas qu'il fasse plus tard comme si rien ne s'était passé. Umibe no Etranger (or Seaside Stranger) is not one of those yaoi stories where they fall in love immediately and then it's just sex, something happens, then more sex. Umibe no Etranger maturely covers issues such as loss, loneliness, and isolation while still managing to be pretty light-hearted and beautiful (seriously, the art is gorgeous). The story is… chaotic. It feels like watching a digest of a series you have never seen. The characters are poorly introduced, it’s riddled with confusing cuts that seem to just skip over huge portions of would-be story, and has timeskips without warning that make it even more confusing. We are given no reason as to why should we care about the characters at all – unless of course you are a fujoshi, in which case the usual procedure would be to get hyped about boy’s love and disregard everything else, no further characterisation is required. Ultimately the story, or at least what I could catch from it, adds up to about an average shounen-ai plotline about dude liking a dude while some people are not fully okay with that. Nothing groundbreaking. I have not read the original work yet, so I don’t know if it too is as rushed as the movie, but guessing based on the fact that it is only one volume long, the adaptation probably didn’t left out much things.

So I am grateful we are finally seeing another side to coming out to your family and how they react, even if it is negative. Morrisy, Kim (October 3, 2021). " "Umibe no Étranger" Review". There is one part where the story finally stays at one place for a longer time and finally starts giving out a bit more coherent storytelling and even a somehow interesting source of conflict which again tempted me to at least give this a 6/10, alas it makes up only about fifth of the runtime and the movie still feels like a very long trailer than an actual movie.
