About this deal

Should I go with friends or alone? Well, friends are always good since you know them, but you might think it’s weird to see a close friend totally naked… If you decide to go alone, you have to be careful too. Have something to give your attention too – a book, good music, a coloring book, sunbathing, etc. Going alone and just “staring”, might be a bit weird and not welcomed. The group's primary goal was to legitimize female toplessness, which although legal in New York, is not generally socially acceptable. Andrews told a reporter in 2014 that she was talking with a male friend about the law in New York that allows women to be topless anywhere a man can, but how no woman ever did. [14] [8] The man partnered with Andrews to found the group. He told a reporter that Andrews, a professional photographer, told him that during her travels she found people in other cultures far more comfortable with the human body than most Americans. The man, who works in the publishing business, obtained some books and the two of them organized a nude book club. [10] Andrews believes "every woman should try toplessness at least once in her life. It's an amazing sensation." [5] We actually went to a beach called Gunnison Beach, in Sandy Hook, New Jersey. Gunnison is known for being the only legal nude beach in the State, plus it’s a LGBTQ+ friendly spot too. It’s known as one of the oldest and best nude beaches on the East Coast to go to.

While they had attracted a few oglers, the members chose to ignore the stares and picture taking. They emphasized that what's important was their ability to exercise their right to go topless. [4] Most people who saw them did not pay much attention. Sometimes businessmen on a lunch break would take surreptitious photos or videos. One former member of the group reported that, "Sometimes you'll have a guy sitting a few feet away, but they eventually get bored. One of them pulled out a camera, and [the girl he was photographing] got right up in his face and took pictures of him." [10] While in Central Park, they reported that "European tourists who take toplessness in stride" make it easier to be bare-chested. [9] In addition to bringing stylistic and cultural expansiveness, Nude also attempts to broaden the narrative around the artistic nude by incorporating transgender bodies – their presence in the show lends all of the exhibition’s photos a degree of ambiguity. With nude models stripped of many of the signifiers denoting queerness or heteronormativity, it can be hard to tell the trans from the cis, the queer from the straight. And while it is true that some of the individuals in Nude, such as those photographed by Japanese artist Momo Okabe, “look trans” due to their combinations of genitalia and secondary sex characteristics, most of the photos in Nude are not so easily read as anything other than human. The court also noted in its ruling that "expert testimony at appellants' trial suggested that the enforced concealment of women's breasts reinforces cultural obsession with them, contributes toward unhealthy attitudes about breasts by both sexes and even discourages women from breastfeeding their children." [31]I chose to participate in Omar Z Robles’s Bare Sky Dance photography series to de-stigmatize the notion that nudity has to always be associated with sexuality in a visual setting, as well as to reclaim my personal right of consent after a silencing my history with sexual assault. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with either sexuality or nudity, I just prefer to not have them be the basis of how I present myself to the world. I personally feel there are ways to express oneself in a more transparent fashion without being as overtly erotic.

Let me know if there are other places and nude beaches in New York that I should add to this list on the comments below!!! I’d love to know them!!! The group invited any woman (and a small number of men) to join them and had received a generally favorable reception in the media and by the public. The group had more than 100 individuals take part, but depending on the event, typically 3-15 women and one or two men attended. [4] [1] Some participants came only once while others were regulars. In 2010, The Naked Cowboy landed his biggest endorsement deal yet with Blue Island Shellfish Farms. They now harvest “Naked Cowboy Oysters” from Long Island Sound and are distributed to fine-dining establishments all over the world. But under this flawless skin is a rotten deception, one deepened by a social-media saturated society. ‘Most of the bodies we see online on a daily basis aren’t even real, but rather enhanced or modified by technology to conform to a current, unsustainable trend,’ says LA-based photographer Julia SH, who is exhibiting powerful, textured portraits of bodies rarely depicted in 21st-century media, presented in museum-like frames. ‘In the US, what little nudity permitted is usually shown in a sexual context. Seeing nudes in a museum is one of the only exceptions to this. I created a series where I framed my models as sculptures and works of art in the hope that the viewer will suspend any judgments about whether they find the models sexually attractive or not, or whether their bodies are socially “acceptable”. The more body types we are exposed to, the more pragmatic our view will become.’

I had never been to nude beaches in New York before, or anywhere else actually, but I have to say that I was always curious to see what it would be like. I mean, I think many people also have this curiosity but, like me, never really had the guts to go.

Males au Naturel (MAN) – a social nudist group just for men that’s been around for many years and still regularly organizes events in NYC. Most of their members identify as gay or bi, but men of any sexual orientation are welcome. More info at http://man.shuttlepod.org/

For instance, the Swedish photographer Julia SH takes the museum as her setting, upsetting traditional western concepts of how that institution regards the female body. She does this by placing plus-sized women into striking, balletic poses on pedestals and in galleries that are more accustomed to displaying young, thinner women. As Hajjar noted, SH’s works are “nothing like what you would have seen in a museum before”. Hajjar added that, “We’re interested in dealing with the ‘nontraditional’ female body and what that looks like.”a b c d Doll, Jen (June 9, 2011).
