Fluorescent lighting is a common type of lighting found in many indoor settings, such as offices, schools, and homes. Fluorescent lights use a low-pressure mercury vapor to create light, and they emit a wide spectrum of light that includes ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths. While this type of lighting is efficient and cost-effective, it can cause problems for photographers. Once you make the decision to use filters, you’ll find there are several general categories of filters available. ( Note: All of the camera filters explained comments below are based on using daylight film in the camera, unless specifically mentioned otherwise.) Haze Reduction**: FLD filters also combat atmospheric haze, which can degrade image clarity and sharpness. Haze, often caused by suspended particles or pollution in the air, can result in a loss of contrast and detail in photos. There are many scenarios when one might want to use a CPL or ND filter, as both excel in different areas of expertise. Let’s narrow down to a handful of opportunities you’re most likely to encounter daily.

When the light is reflected, it creates flare in your image. Flare is represented in one of two ways–by circles of light in your image or by a loss of contrast in a section of the image. Neutral density filters are used primarily to decrease the shutter speed. The way they work is to reduce the amount of light entering the lens at once, which means that if you want to correctly expose, you need a longer shutter speed. There is a minimum and a maximum effect of polarization, depending on the filter alignment. You should rotate the filter every time you compose for best results. An FLD filter, also known as a fluorescent light filter, is a type of optical filter used in photography and videography. How does it help? Polarized light comes from light that has been reflected off of something. It can come from the light reflecting off an alpine lake, reflections from a coffee shop window, or even light reflecting off moisture and pollution in the atmosphere. Polarized light is made up of scattered rays and is something you don’t want in your shot. A reverse ND grad is used for sunrise and sunset shots: the tint is stronger in the filter center rather than at the top. Just like standard ND filters, ND grads come in varying strengths, too.
