About this deal

Filming 1080p or 720p without digital stabilisation takes the full sensor width and scales it down to the desired resolution without any field-reduction (beyond the 16:9 widescreen crop). The longest clip length is the usual second shy of half an hour and in terms of battery life, on a single charge I managed to record four 29:59 clips and a final one lasting 20:27 – for a total recording time of 140 minutes and 23 seconds, almost two and a half hours. At the end of the process, parts of the camera were a little warm, but not hot. The Canon EOS 200D is an interesting small-scale DSLR, designed for beginners, yet comprehensive enough for photo enthusiasts too. It arrives at a time when mirrorless models - such as Canon's own EOS M6 - are arguably the more prolific cameras to buy, thanks to speedy screen-based or viewfinder-based autofocus. To be fair, a DSLR could only allow an electronic shutter in live view, but it’d still be a useful feature to have. I should also add the 200D / SL2 does actually deploy an electronic shutter when capturing a timelapse video, but you can’t use it in normal live view shooting modes. I tested the EOS 200D / Rebel SL2 with a variety of lenses including the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 STM, EF 50mm f1.8 STM, EF 85mm f1.8 and EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM II. The STM lenses feature the best focusing performance in live view and movies, so if you intend to film lots of video or shoot using the screen, I’d recommend going for them over non-STM lenses. Enjoy high quality performance, low cost prints and ultimate convenience with the PIXMA G series of refillable ink tank printers.

Highlight Tone Priority is a custom function which can be enabled from the menu. Use of this custom function improves highlight detail by expanding the camera's dynamic range in the highlights. As you can see from these examples, Highlight Tone Priority reduced the extent of highlight blow-out considerably.

I should also add that if the mode dial is set to Creative Filters and you enter movie mode, yet another selection of effects becomes available: Dream, Old Movies, Memory, Dramatic B&W, or Miniature which are applied automatically to the clip as you film – see the Movie mode section in a moment. The night photograph was very good, with the maximum shutter speed of 30 seconds and Bulb mode allowing you to capture enough light in all situations. The different Picture Styles and the ability to create your own are a real benefit to JPEG shooters, as are the Highlight Tone Priority and Auto Lighting Optimizer custom settings when used in the right conditions. The HDR mode combines three images taken at different exposures to create a single image with greater dynamic range, while the Creative Filters allow you to preview the effect before shooting. Those with sharp eyes will also notice a new connectivity button on the top of the camera to the left of the pop-up flash, which can be used to initiate a fast wireless connection. A small green LED blinks to tell you the cameras Wi-Fi is active, which turns constant when a successful connection has been made. The other button you get on the EOS 200D that you won’t find on the EOS 1300D is a depth-of-field preview button below the lens release. sec (1/2 or 1/3 stop increments), Bulb (Total shutter speed range. Available range varies by shooting mode)

Whatever type of photography shall you prefer, Canon EOS 200D is superior to Canon EOS 2000D in all conditions.First time incorporated into an EOS DSLR, Creative Assist and smooth skin feature would allow you to achieve desired effects on your photos and easily take picture perfect selfies. Stay connected to the camera with the Low energy Bluetooth connection and send images to your mobile devices as you shoot for ease of sharing. The camera has access to mechanical shutter speeds between 1/4000 and 30 seconds, plus a Bulb option for longer exposures; the fastest flash sync speed is 1/200. There’s no built-in Bulb timers for pre-set periods, but when shooting in Live View you can start and stop a Bulb exposure by tapping the screen and a timer is helpfully displayed. There’s no interval timer facilities built-in either, unless you count the timelapse movie mode which doesn’t record the individual images. Offering some consolation though is the supplied EOS Utility for Mac OS and Windows systems which, when connected via USB or Wifi, offers both an interval timer and Bulb timer; the Camera Connect app also lets you tap your phone’s screen to start a Bulb exposure and again to stop it. The advice doesn’t go into any great detail, but should prove useful to users just starting out with a DSLR who may be unsure of how changing key camera settings will affect their images. Instead, these are accessed via the Q menu, but only in live view mode. When using the viewfinder, pressing the Q button accesses a simpler Q menu with a reduced set of functions, so the only way to change the white balance or image quality settings is via the main menu, which is slower to navigate. The 800D has the same simplified Q menu but there’s an option to revert to the older, more comprehensive version. That option isn’t available on the 200D. Canon EOS 200D review: Connectivity

To formally measure the burst shooting speed of the 200D / SL2, I fitted it with a freshly-formatted Lexar Professional 32GB UHS-II 2000x card, rated at 300MB/s, set the shutter to 1/500, the sensitivity to 400 ISO and fired-off a number of tests. The 200D uses the same sensor and DIGIC 7 processor as the Canon EOS 800D so it’s no surprise that their image quality and performance are hard to separate. The 200D captured a shot every 0.3 seconds when using the viewfinder, and between 0.3 and 0.9 seconds in live view mode. The Canon EOS 200D has 2 different JPEG file quality settings available, including Fine and Normal, with Fine being the higher quality option. Here are two 100% crops which show the quality of the two options. Fine (5.87Mb) (100% Crop)zone dual-layer metering sensor with Evaluative, partial, spot (centre only) and centre-weighted average available

Wifi lets you wirelessly remote control the camera with a Mac or Windows computer (using the free EOS Utility) or with an iOS or Android smartphone (using the free Camera Connect app). You can wirelessly transfer images to a variety of devices including smartphones, computers, printers and compatible cameras, or view them on DLNA devices like a Wifi-equipped TV. Alternatively you can connect the camera directly to the internet and share images on various networks via Canon’s Image Gateway. Turning to metering and exposure, this is looked after by a 63-zone dual-layer metering sensor. Exposure can be refined using the exposure-compensation system, which offers 1/3 stop or 1/2 stop increment adjustment over a +/-5EV range. Whatever type of photography shall you prefer, Nikon D5600 is superior to Canon EOS 200D in all conditions. There’s no shortage of fine detail in the centre of this wide-angle shot, and only a slight fall-off of focus towards the edges (1/160s, f/9, ISO 100, 29mm equivalent) Returning to the app, the Remote Live Shooting option allows you to remote control the camera with your phone. You’ll see a Live View of the scene on your phone, and you can tap anywhere to refocus on a different subject, or double-tap for a magnified view. Depending on the camera’s shooting mode, you can also remote control the exposure, including the shutter, aperture, ISO or compensation, as well as White Balance, metering, AF mode, drive mode and image quality. Taking the app beyond most rivals, you can also adjust the manual focus of the lens in a choice of three increments in either direction – just like the ‘grown-up’ EOS Utility running on a Mac or Windows system. If the camera’s mode dial is set to Manual, you can also set the shutter to Bulb and tap once to start the exposure, and again to end it, complete with a handy timer on your phone’s screen; this is some compensation for the camera itself not featuring its own Bulb timers.Canon has made quite a few changes from the 100D across the body, some of which are more obvious than others. One of the noticeable differences is the material used around the handgrip. The rubberised texture is smoother and not as grippy as it was on the EOS 100D. Strictly comparing the SL2 and D3400 you'll see that they each have their own strengths and weaknesses. While there are 'little things' like the type of LCD, viewfinder size and wireless functionality, live view autofocus is the main differentiator. It's simply no contest there with the SL2's AF system blowing away the D3400 in live view and movie mode. Above: In terms of controls, Canon’s made a number of changes to the top panel of the 200D / SL2 compared to its predecessor. The presence of wireless connectivity is indicated by a dedicated Wifi button to the left of the viewfinder hump, although if you can exploit Bluetooth or NFC, you won’t be needing it as you’ll be able to initiate the connection from your phone. The mode dial to the right of the viewfinder hump is now indented and flush to the upper panel, and Canon’s also dispensed with the earlier chunky power switch around it in favour of a separate power dial to the side. While both controls offer the same Off, On and Movie positions, I prefer the older style on the 100D / SL1 as it felt more tactile. Meanwhile the single finger dial remains behind the shutter release button, and in front of it the dedicated ISO button is now joined by a DISP button. The new Canon EOS 200D represents a big step forward from the 4-year-old 100D / SL1 model, with a deeper hand-grip, vari-angle LCD screen, faster Dual Pixel Live View auto-focusing system, 1080p movies at 60fps, Bluetooth connectivity and longer battery life. The smallest Canon DSLR camera isn't the cheapest (that title goes to the EOS 1300D), but we'd definitely pay the extra and choose the Canon EOS 200D. In case you are wondering which of these cameras you should buy, then this is the right place to find an answer. Here you will find listed all the main differences among Canon EOS 200D and Canon EOS 2000D, calculated by the CameraRace iCamRank algorithm.
