And there's Ambilight. This unique-to-Philips technology spreads light that matches what's on-screen across the walls, making the TV feel even bigger, and helping with eye comfort and atmosphere. We'll talk more about it later, but it really is a compelling addition. Philips’ new OLED807 is the first to adopt the new, brighter OLED EX panel and also uses the latest 6th gen P5 AI image processing suite. The Philips OLED807 certainly has a lot of competition this year - but we’d say it has more than enough unique qualities to stand out from the crowd. Outside of that, it retains the same core features we love about the C3 range as a whole. Specifically, it features the same Alpha 9 Gen 6 processor as the 65-inch C3 and G3, and identical connectivity, with it sporting four PS5 and Xbox Series X/S-ready HDMI 2.1 ports that support 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM. It can also handle Dolby Vision gaming (right up to 120Hz, in fact) and an HGiG mode for more accurate HDR gaming. OLED EX (anacronymof 'Evolution' and 'eXperience') uses deuterium gas and proprietary algorithm-based ‘EX Technology’ to boost brightness by predicting the usage amount of each individual diode based on your viewing habits. This apparently enables the screen to 'more accurately express the details and colours of the video content being played'.To be clear, broadly speaking we don't recommend that you invest in an 8K TV at the moment. There's practically no 8K content that's worth watching – and none even confirmed as being on the way. But, if you want to use 8K and OLED in the same sentence when describing your TV to friends, the LG OLED77Z2 is the set to get. Featuring a giant 77-inch OLED screen, the Z2 is the only 8K OLED TV we’ve tested – Samsung’s competing QE75QN900B uses a Mini LED panel instead. The design will always split opinion, but I happen to really like the way the set looks and functions having lived with one for a number of weeks now. The picture quality with SDR and HDR content is superb and among the best, I have seen this year for accuracy out of the box and when calibrated. But if accuracy is not your thing, and you detest manufacturers' Vivid modes, Philips also offers you something more balanced but with stronger, brighter colours along with edge enhancement and sharpening features and motion processing to give you a silky smooth image, if that is what you want. The thing is, there is a choice for everyone within the Philips picture line-up where some care has been taken with every picture preset on offer.

The set’s mid-range is wide and dynamic enough to deliver even dense action scenes with authority and conviction, easily avoiding the thin, hemmed in feel you get with big movie moments on so many TVs. The power and dynamic range that delivers this impressive mid-range performance also contributes to excellent detailing; a nicely projected sound stage that seems to exist well beyond the edges of the screen; and convincing, clear vocals. The 8007 is Philips' entry-level Ambilight TV for 2022. It offers a 4K 60Hz LED panel, Pixel Precise Ultra HD processing and three-sided Ambilight. What's surprising is the way this sound system also extends the sonic presentation far to the sides and above the set, creating a very impressive pseudo-Atmos effect. On top of that, the sound is crisp, clear and detailed. Some extra bass weight and depth would be nice, but this is still very good sound by TV standards. The OLED807 has two extra drivers over the OLED806 it replaces, resulting in a 4.1 system rated to a claimed, impressive-sounding 70W in total. And the TV does actually sound pretty impressive, as long as you avoid the default Entertainment setting, which adds a slightly synthetic edge to some sounds and seems to exaggerate bass to a degree that makes voices sound a bit unnatural. Tech fans expect faster, smarter gadgets every year so it's no surprise that Philips has treated its latest TVs to a new processing chip, the 6th Gen P5 AI.Information about the brightness of the screen. It is measured in candela per square metre (cd/m²).

The big design difference between it and its siblings is that it has two blade-like feet that take up less desk space rather than a pedestal. The positive is that these are easy to move around and take up less space; the downside is that we found there’s less room to place a soundbar under it. Soundwise, the 807 features an upgraded, high-quality and more powerful 70W 2.1 sound system with a dedicated triple ring, rear-facing bass driver supported by four passive radiators. Highlights include the amazing picture quality that’s full of contrast and natural colours, plus the best gaming feature set you’ll find on any 77-inch TV, regardless of price. And gaming has gotten a boost too. Not only is 4K 120Hz support with VRR now possible over the two HDMI 2.1 ports (with two more HDMI 2.0 ports available), but there's a new Game Bar that makes it easy to change settings depending on the type of game you're playing. This means you can optimise for low latency (which Philips says can be as little as 9ms), image fidelity or make sure settings such as the AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync support are enabled and working. Ambilight is a proprietary Philips technology that extends the onscreen action onto the wall around the TV in the form of coloured light. Not only does it look fabulous, it increases perceived contrast and draws the eye more effectively into the action. If you can't tell, we're big fans.

Philips 77OLED807 OLED TV review

Even against other 42-inch OLEDs that have the same inherent picture traits, the C3 comes out on top. This is a bold, impactful TV that delivers images with superb solidity and dynamism, but it's also very consistent and never makes you aware of the picture processing in play. It's also an absolute doddle to get looking its best – just use Dolby Vision Cinema Home for Dolby Vision content and Filmmaker Mode for pretty much everything else and you're pretty much sorted (though do by all means tweak further to taste). If you have the space for a 77-inch TV and want a wonderfully immersive OLED that doesn’t require you to remortgage your house, the LG OLED77C2 is the one to get.

It really brings movies to life in dim viewing rooms and is bright enough to also make daytime viewing of normal TV programs a joy There are very few TVs that sound good, though, so we almost always recommend adding a soundbar. Follow that advice and the 48-inch C3 is comfortably the best TV at its size. DTS Play-Fi rear speaker with AmbilightFor some time, Sony OLED TVs have offered a function to let the user

It’s well-populated with content these days, too, with the likes of Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, Prime Video, and Netflix all present and correct. It’s still missing the catch-up services for one or two of the UK’s main terrestrial broadcasters, but Philips has covered that by also equipping the OLED807 with the Freeview Play app, which brings all the UK’s catch-up apps together into one easy overall interface.
