There are a number of different books and DVD’s available about County tractors. Stuart Gibbard has written and narrated several books/DVD’s about Countys, in particular his County: A Pictorial Review is Vintage Tractor Engineer’s favourite. It is a collection of 280 rare and mainly colour prototype and production photos of these tractors from 1929-1983. One of those heeding the call was 16-year-old John Henry Dueringer. He enlisted Nov. 2, 1862, at Freedom, Illinois, into the Yates Sharpshooters — afterward known as the Illinois 64th Regiment. He would fight in three major engagements: New Madrid Island, the siege of Corinth, Mississippi, and Fort Pillow. He was fired upon 19 times. Eventually, the rigors and hardships of war would catch up with him. He was honorably discharged and was mustered out May 15, 1863. County also made MF135 and MF165 Hi-Hi tractors and the Leyland 485 and 4100 machines at Fleet. We also made the heavy duty rear axles for the Leyland 285 and 2100 tractors produced at Bathgate. IF anybody has a copy of an 1174 manual I would be very keen to get a copy. More than happy to pay.
It’s great to hear some in depth knowledge from an ex-County man and to make sure our info is correct. Which factory did you work at and which was your favourite tractor? I know that manuals on CD are not as convenient as the proper booklets – but that’s all I could find for now. Production started in 1968 with the 4000 Four. Based on the Ford 4000 the front axle was driven by a single propshaft with this design. These tractors were built to offer customers better headland manouvrability, although the traction capabilities were not as good as the equal wheeled machines. Production continued with the 6600 Four, 7600 Four, 7700 Four, and the 7610 Four. County also made 4WD conversions of International and Leyland tractors, albeit in limited numbers. The 634 All Wheel Drive was based on the International 634 and about 50 were made between 1969 and 1972 – these tractors produced 63bhp. Dueringer presented the gift to the group after he presented the program “Destination Guthrie” — the story of his family’s 3,800-mile journey in 1867 from Hanau, Germany, to Liverpool, England, to the U.S., down the Ottawa Trail and finally to Guthrie in Ford County, just north of Gibson City. The map given to the historical society “clearly and distinctly shows the Ottawa Trail from Ottawa down through Ford County and on to Danville,” Dueringer said. The map — which is in a “beautiful wooden frame and museum glass by Hobby Lobby,” Dueringer said — will be displayed at the historical society’s Water Tower Museum behind City Hall in downtown Paxton, which is open from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturdays or by appointment by calling 217-379-4111.In the program he gave to the historical society, Dueringer explained in great detail how his family ended up leaving Germany and arriving at its eventual destination of Ford County:

The stability and traction of the County was employed in spreading fertiliser up the steep sides of these Dales. Also can make it difficult to take it out of gear and in bad cases machine will try to creep forward. Usually either warped plate or friction plate ceased on splines.
