The photo I attached really says it all (given the amount of dye I used). The mold on the left was made using a slightly translucent silicone rubber. There is also one on the right made from the same silicone, for which I did not used any dye or pigment, so I included it in the picture for reference. If you are not sure which way to go with a colour, and you find yourself confounded as to which direction to go, simply drop a small dollop of the base coloured silicone onto a clean white mixing palette and drop a tiny amount of each pigment at intervals around the outer edge. Make sure the colorants are compatible with each other and with the silicone base before mixing them together. Gelatin is long chains of hundreds of amino acids. At room temperature it is solid, but when you heat it up the bonds between the chains loosen, allowing them to slide and stretch apart. Gelatin also has a strong affinity for water. Hydrogen atoms that are attached to the side of the chains can bond with water molecules. Casting dyes I've used in the past to color either a resin or silicone rubber only require a very, very small amount of dye, a drop or two per fluid oz. typically would result in a bold, bright color. When I went to try out this dye, I was shooting for a bold opaque orange, similar to the nitrile gloves I was wearing but a little darker/brownish. I started with about 3 drops of red, 4 of yellow, 1 of white, and 1 of brown. The result was a pail, weak kind of pastel peach color. I kept adding more dye until I had put in about When dying silicone, it’s important to keep in mind that the color will likely be lighter than expected once it dries.
