About this deal

Another useful feature is that the Avata has 20GB of internal storage, so forgetting to bring storage isn’t a catastrophe. You can set this space to be used even if you do insert a microSD card to provide some resilience against a card error ruining your best shot. DJI Avata is controlled with the DJI Fly app, which includes detailed tutorials on how to operate the drone. The DJI Virtual Flight App is a free simulator app that familiarizes new pilots with drone flying movements in an easy, fun and risk-free environment. The simulator allows pilots to fly DJI Avata in various settings using the dedicated controller. If FPV flyers want the highest quality video, they usually strap an action camera to their machines, making them even more challenging to fly. What’s slightly odd about the Goggles 2 is that, in most regards, they are superior to the Goggles V2, but not in every respect.

DJI Avata is equipped with both an Infrared Sensing System and a two-camera Downward Vision System. They help the aircraft maintain its current position, hover more precisely, fly indoors or in other environments where satellite navigation is unavailable, and identify areas such as bodies of water that are not suitable for landing. To remain oriented during flight while wearing goggles, DJI Avata and DJI Goggles 2 also display the Home Point where the drone took off from. This Augmented Reality (AR) perspective gives an extra sense of orientation to help the pilot locate the immediate environment in seconds. Critically, the transmission bandwidth is still up to 50Mbps, so it’s a balance between resolution and framerate, with the new Goggles 2 going for resolution over frames-per-second. Again battery was out, and it was time to test the recording; the first outing with the AVATA had already shown that flying as fast as you can while recording, wearing the goggles and using the motion controller while a lot of fun would burn through the battery at incredible speed. FPV controls do the same things, but where a standard camera drone will always stop, level itself and hover using GPS positioning when the controls are released, an FPV drone will crash if the controls are released in Acro mode. The new product here – DJI Goggles 2 – is included in the more expensive Pro View bundle, which is what we tested with. The drone also works with the DJI FPV Goggles V2, introduced with the DJI FPV last year, and this is what comes with the Fly Smart combo. Yes, the naming is more than a little confusing!

The DJI Avata makes FPV video accessible to the masses thanks to an impressive drone that’s capable of satisfying the needs of both beginners and highly-skilled FPV drone pilots.

Similarly, all the modes are a little slower than its predecessor, with 'Normal' mode only offering 8m/s and sport mode 14m/s. And, climbing is capped at just 6m/s irrespective of mode, where the FPV had no limit on climb rate in manual mode and 15m/s in Sport. We feel compelled to note that confidence can lead to crashes; it did for us! Structurally that didn’t seem to be a problem, and we won’t question individual responsibility, but it is worth remembering the weight means this shouldn’t be flow too near others. FPV video can (and does) drop out occasionally.

FPV drones are all about video capture, and while traditional FPV drones would be extremely difficult to use to capture photos, the Avata does have the ability to easily capture JPEGs. This is functionality that’s better to have than not, but with single-axis mechanical stabilization (vertical) on the gimbal, if the Avata is rolling into the wind during hovering to hold its position then the horizon in photos will be at an angle, so the Avata is certainly not the ideal drone for stills photography.

More About Speed Than Cinema

I had similar safety concerns around the DJI FPV Combo, though it at least includes forward-facing obstacle sensors that allow for safer use around people. The Avata has downward-facing ToF IR sensors to make high-speed, ground-hugging flights possible, but don’t offer protection in other directions. The sensors also improve stability when flying indoors without a GPS assist—the drone is smart enough to slow down when it's flying in tight confines, a plus if you're trying to recreate the Tesla Gigafactory Cinewhoop tour video for fun or profit, or if you simply want to see if you can fly through your house without damaging anything. Tested with a production model DJI Avata in a controlled environment. Actual experience may vary depending on the environment, usage, and firmware version. There’s no question that the Avata is one of the best drones that’s incredibly nimble and fun to fly — which can be said for all of DJI’s drones. Unlike, say, the Air 2S or Mavic 3, which are aimed at those who want to film breathtaking scenery, the Avata is made for those who want a taste of drone racing, but don’t want to go through the process of building a drone from scratch. I used the Avata with the DJI Goggles 2, the newer (and pricier) of the two compatible pairs. The Goggles support O3 transmission for a pretty strong control range—I only saw one weak signal message flash across the screen during my test flights, which arrived when a patch of trees separated me from the drone, which was about 700 feet away at the time. There's a certain Robocop aesthetic to the DJI Goggles 2, but I'm no Peter Weller FPV flying is almost entirely done with a headset, which DJI calls its Goggles, The new Goggles 2 is one option bundled with the Avata, but it will work with the older Goggles V2 also.
