A single short video clip easily takes up hundreds of megabytes of space, so you’ll want a big microSD card and plenty of hard drive space on your PC and/or smartphone. The image quality improvements don’t stop when you head underwater either. AquaVision auto-balances out colours, resulting in crystal-clear underwater content that looks like it was shot in broad daylight. Just toggle it on in the app—no external filter or further editing needed. Thanks to the two cameras, when not shooting 360-degree video, you can also capture MultiView footage, which shows a split screen of what’s in front of and behind the camera while you’re shooting. The creative possibilities are endless with easy 360 reframing tools in the Insta360 app. Tap to add a keyframe and change the perspective of your footage. InstaPano is a brand-new photo mode for capturing beautiful panoramas. Rather than moving your camera or phone across a scene and getting poor-stitched, blurry panoramas, it’s just one tap and done. Of course, another advantage of being able to edit the viewpoint after filming is that you can put the camera at the side of the road and ride past, then pan in post-production, giving the impression of a videographer standing there. When you want to capture traditional flat videos, there’s Steady Cam mode. This mode puts all your firepower behind one of ONE X2’s lenses, capturing ultra-stable, ultra-wide footage that’s ready for instant sharing.

The free Insta360 smartphone software is very well done and one of the best pieces of software I have used for a camera experience on a phone. When you first launch the app you can setup an account and then connect the camera. The camera connects via WiFi and Bluetooth for content transfer and camera control functions.

I’ve noticed no obvious or consistent difference in the video quality between the One X2 and the One R in 360 mode. Insta360 Studio is powerful piece of software especially for editing 360 videos from with camera since there are more options for desktop to upload to social media at higher resolutions than via phone.The Insta360 app is a great way to get started with either camera. It allows you to control your camera and choose modes. This approach makes a lot of sense and the app does work quite well once you’ve got a hang of the workflow. Reframing is a case of simply adding keyframes as you scrub through a clip’s timeline and there’s an auto mode if you don’t want to edit by hand. Choosing a 360 camera is quite a step from a typical action camera, and it’s a big investment. There are limitations but there are also a huge number of advantages… It can be a bit of a fiddle to pair in the first place, but make sure you follow the instructions online to update the camera’s firmware if necessary, then turn it on, then the remote. Reset the remote by pressing both buttons together than go to ‘Bluetooth remote’ in the settings on the camera without the app connected. You can also use the software to create advanced videos like time-lapse mode, slow motion video, panoramic shots, and more.
