You specify the start and end of the clip by tapping the screen to position a 1920×1080 sized frame. You can also set the overall time of the clip to either 40 or 20 seconds. The degree of zoom is limited to the full 4k frame at the wide end to the 1920×1080 frame at the ‘zoomed-in’ end to maintain quality. It’s a neat feature which, once again, makes innovative use of the camera’s 4k resolution to make life easier, particularly if you need a super-smooth panning shot, but don’t have a suitable tripod. LVF (Live View Finder) (1,166k dots equiv.), Field of View: Approx. 100%, Lens 19.6x/Magnification: Approx. 2.59x / 0.46x (35 mm camera equivalent)

Photo enthusiasts will also love the fact that – of course - Raw files can be captured on the TZ95 alongside, or in tandem with, JPEGs, and without any noticeable slow down too in terms of operational speed in regular single shot mode. This being a Panasonic camera, we get the inevitable 4K photo mode to further ease the possibility of capturing the exact shot we want by being able to grab an 8 megapixel still from a 30fps sequence. Otherwise the 20 megapixel maximum resolution is probably as high as you want from a bog standard 1/2.3-inch chip – and for the most part, in available light, the images largely shine. Photo is an innovative system which is useful for extracting stills of fast moving subjects. However, it’s fair to say that it works best with Panasonic’s larger sensor cameras, such as its range of compact system cameras. With the Panasonic Lumix DC-TZ90, even when shooting in bright light, the extracted stills can look a little smudgy. Axis HYBRID O.I.S. +*/* 5-Axis compensation works in video recording except for 4K video or high-speed video recording. As well as the new vlogger tools, older models to compare and contrast with the TZ95 include the Canon PowerShot SX740 HS. This boasts a similar form factor yet has a broader focal range courtesy of a whopping 40x optical zoom. Just like the Panasonic it offers a 20.3 megapixel 1/2.3-inch sensor, and under ideal daylight conditions provides color-rich, punchy images requiring little if any image adjustment afterward. In the end, whether you’re drawn towards the Panasonic Lumix DC-TZ90 depends on what you’re looking for in a travel compact camera. It has an awful lot going for it, so long as you avoid shooting in low light.

While we’d conclude that the Panasonic Lumix TZ95 / ZS80 is in many respects an impressive little travel photography option for when you want something with a larger lens and broader focal range than your typical smartphone can manage – along with supplying plentiful creative options – if you do want to dig a little deeper however, there are, inevitably, little operational niggles here. There’s three options: Burst (which records video while the shutter button is pressed), Burst S / S (which starts recording with one press and stops with another), and 4K Pre-burst (which keeps a one-second rolling buffer to avoid unwieldy clips to store and go through). When you press the shutter in Pre-burst mode, the camera records two seconds / 60 frames worth of action: you get the second before you pressed the button and the second after. So if you press the button as soon as the action has just happened, you should have a frame which includes some part of it from a moment earlier. has four times the pixel density of Full HD and this camera lets you capture your memories in this ultra-crisp resolution. Shoot 4K video at 30fps to capture the action in smooth hyper-detail. The 4K Photo function lets you select the perfect split-second moment from your Ultra HD footage to save as an 8MP equivalent still.

Review Roundup

The zoom lens is what sets this camera apart from your smartphone, and it puts in a reasonably solid performance – again, when shooting in good lighting conditions. At the very far end of the 30x optical zoom, images retain a decent amount of detail, but there’s some smudging to be seen if you examine any closer than around A4 size. The lens performs fairly well throughout the rest of the zoom range, too. The BLG10E battery (the same one used in the TZ80 / ZS60) provides enough power on a full charge for 380 shots using the screen exclusively or 250 shots with the EVF so, in practice, probably somewhere between the two. That’s a little better than the 250 shots you’ll get with the Canon PowerShot SX730 HS, but the SX730 HS’s Eco energy saving mode extends that to a more generous 355 shots.
