About this deal

The fact that it’s compact and lightweight makes it a lens that will go everywhere with you without an extra thought, and it’s made even more convenient by the excellent clamshell case that accompanies it. Samyang AF 35mm F1.8 bottom left corner sharpness (top left f/1.8, top right f/2.8, bottom left f/4, bottom right f/5.6)

Apochromatic lenses have special lens elements (aspheric, extra-low dispersion etc) to minimize the problem, hence they usually cost more. Bokeh is the quality of the defocus, not the amount of defocus. Focal length has more to do with defocus than aperture; any 50mm f/1.8 lens like Nikon's superb 50mm f/.8 D will throw things far further out-of-focus. This section produces a slightly mixed bag of results, mostly due to the fact that the competition is a little stronger at 35mm than at, say, the 50mm F1.8 standard I was comparing to with their previous lens. Viltrox AF 35mm F1.8 STM is a very nicely built lens with some positive features, but competitors offer better magnification and even some weather sealing. I’d love to see Viltrox incorporate an AF/MF switch (they did on their RF 85mm F1.8) and start to include weather sealing in their designs, but outside of that, this is a lot of lens for the money. Viltrox AF 35mm STM Autofocus Performance Samyang 35mm F1.4 AS UMC lens was designed to suit SLR and DSLR cameras. On a full frame camera the 35mm focal length has universal applications. It is a bright and fast wide-angle lens perfect for landscape, journalism and everyday scenarios. There are many 35mm F1.4 with AF which are more bulky , the best of all is the Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art (1500 euros)Although at minimum focusing distance the Samyang does not performs as well as when you use it at normal distance 1-3m. The Sony has better sharpness at min focusing distance

On my sample, I had to turn it to a slightly closer distance for perfect focus at infinity. Astronomers beware. It is weather sealed and the build quality is good although you feel it is below a GM or Zeiss lens and a little bit less though than the Sony FE 35mm F1.8 There's an Ultra Multi-layer Coating to help reduce flare and ghosting and it also boasts a new Custom Mode switch for changing the function of the focus ring. This doesn’t mean that the Sony doesn’t have its place, with the superior build quality, better CA wide open, unbeatable AF performance in video, zero breathing and better close up capabilities It is a very solid choice as long as you can forgive some corner softness. Samyang vs. Sony Pricing The Samyang isn’t a zero-distortion lens but the amount of barrel distortion is only slight. If it does become noticeable, for example in architectural photography, in-camera correction is available and the uniform nature of the distortion also makes it easy to correct manually. Verdict

Although small and lightweight, the construction feels solid and robust, combining plastic barrel parts with a metal mounting plate. Weather-seals are fitted to the joints of the lens and around the Custom switch, to fend off the ingress of dust and moisture. The second edition of Samyang’s E-mount 35mm f/1.4 prime delivers exceptional sharpness and excellent all-round performance. It also adds some neat handling extras, compared with the original lens, yet still sells for around half the price of Sony’s own-brand FE 35mm F1.4 G Master. All in all, the Samyang is a fabulous lens and outstanding value at the price.
