About this deal

Ordnance Survey Munro Blog - OS is Britain's mapping agency. They make the most up-to-date and accurate maps of the United Kingdom. They have also produced a blog on the Munros. Map is drawn approximately to a scale of 1 mile per 0.5cm (1:330 000) and shows the north direction. Munro Map Feature List Ben Lawers is a favourite with climbers all over Scotland. The highest mountain in the Southern Highlands teems with wildlife and there are sublime views over Loch Tay from the summit. The relatively easy route to the top even takes you via another Munro, Beinn Ghlas (1,103m), so you get two for the price of one! of the 282 Scottish Munros have an official OSI prominence above 30 m, except Maoile Lunndaidh, who was found in a 2014 survey to be lower than nearby Creag Toll a' Choin. [6] Thus, Maoile Lunndaidh had its prominence reduced from 400 m to just under 11 m, and the 400 m of prominence given to Creag Toll a' Choin. Note that Creag Toll a' Choin had previously been a Munro until later mapping favoured Maoile Lunndaidh. Munro Tops are summits that are over 3,000ft, but considered to be a subsidiary top of a nearby Munro. There are currently 227 Munro Tops. The Murdos, a list created by Alan Dawson to bring objectivity to the classification of subsidiary summits of Munros, are Scottish hills over 3,000ft with a minimum drop of 30 metres on all sides. All Munros are Murdos, but not all Munro Tops are Murdos. There are 442 Murdos. Harold Street Munros Lists of GPS waypoints + Grid References for walking in UK mountains and hills in various GPS file formats.

The mountains in Scotland over 3,000 feet (914.4 metres) in height are called the Munros. Named after Hugh Munro, the first person to compile a list of them in 1891, there were were originally 283 Munros. Tourist route’ is a bit of a misnomer though as it’s actually quite a long and strenuous trek to the top. It’s a well-maintained path to be sure, but it’s over ten miles in length and will take most people around eight hours to complete. We’ll get some more details on the best munros soon. But for now, choose one or a group that is nearby and give it a go! It might appear daunting when the steep slopes are viewed from the north, but looking at it from the east shows that it’s a slender mountain with a long slope that gradually rises to its peak, and it’s this route that is so appealing to beginner hill walkers. The route to the summit is exceptionally pretty and if the road leading to the dam is followed then a good portion of it is exceptionally easy to walk as well. It’s an activity that’s challenging, to say the least, but it’s an incredibly rewarding experience that’s also very addictive once you get into it. The mountain is maintained by the John Muir Trust and just like at Schiehallion they’ve done a superb job of creating an accessible path which zigzags its way to the summit, though it gets rougher and scree-covered towards the top. Once there you’ll be presented with superb views in all directions, but take care as there are steep drops, especially on the north face. Bidean Nam Bian

Munro published his findings in the Scottish Mountaineering Club journal in 1891 with a set of tables that detailed 538 summits over 3,000 feet. Of these, 282 were classified as separate mountains, and it’s these that we refer to today as ‘Munros’. Each Munro is represented by a coloured triangle. The colour represents the Munro area that it belongs to; each of the 17 Munro areas has its own colour which is identified by a Munro area key at the bottom right hand side of the map. The average time to complete a round is around 20 years, but that hasn’t stopped some individuals from repeating the climb up all 282 Munros multiple times over. The height of Munros in Scotland are mountains 3,000 ft(914.4m) or over. HOW MANY MUNROS ARE THERE IN SCOTLAND? The achievements of these Munroists (yes, you can officially call yourself a ‘Munroist’ after finishing your first round) are inspiring to say the least, and they include the youngest who finished his first round at just 9 years old and the current record holder who has an incredible 16 rounds under his belt. The Cairngorm range is part of the wider Grampian mountains which cover a large area of Scotland between the far northern Highlands and the Central Lowlands, and it includes many of the highest mountains in the UK such as Ben Nevis and Cairn Gorm.
