About this deal

Solid ending, finished cleanly with no frustrating cliffhangers or obviously loose plot holes. Gets 3 stars instead of 4 because there are some exciting events/confrontations I wanted to see during the middle of the book that just fizzled and didn’t happen (almost like a disappointing cop-out in the story telling, but I can’t give details there without spoilers) but the last few chapters gave me some of the action I was wanting earlier and gives an ending that feels complete (which kept it at 3 stars instead of dropping to 2). Bombur is the fattest of the Dwarves, and spends most of his time eating and sleeping. He is out of shape, moves slower than the other Dwarves, and frequently complains about being tired. In Mirkwood Forest, he dreams enchanted dreams about food. Following The Hobbit, he becomes so overweight he cannot walk. Most of the time, when an author does something like this, it's because he/she is leading up to the next installment of the saga. But, upon reading Heitz's afterword, it's made clear that he's done with the dwarves. In fact, he points out that the ending is "unambiguous."

was in charge of lighting fires, along with Glóin. Following The Hobbit, he was killed defending Moria. Something hissed from the right, bored through his muzzle and shattered the long, thin upper jaw, adding to his agony. His yelps grew louder and ended abruptly as a dozen arrows flew at once from various directions, spiking him. Returning to the kingdom of Girdlegard is rarely a disappointing experience and there were some loose ends left dangling in the series, particularly the fate of our hero Tungdil Goldhand. The story starts with Tungdil’s loyal friend Boindil Doubleblade, his wife Goda and their children, which all seems very familiar until it becomes apparent this story is set 250 years after the events of “The Revenge of the Dwarves”.

Fíli and Kíli are nephews of Thorin and the youngest in the Company. They rarely are mentioned without each other. They carry spades and blue hoods, and often sang. They have the sharpest eyes in the Company, and often are look outs for danger. They are killed in the Battle of Five Armies while defending Thorin. But the nations still distrust each other, and when a child is found in the Grey Mountains who speaks the language of the älfar, the dwarves believe this little girl heralds a new threat. And they will be right – just not in the way they thought.

Tolkien gave a radio interview for BBC 4 in 1971. The following is a question he was asked and his answer:Reaching Rivendell in June, the company held talks with Elrond and learned about the secret Moon-letters on Thorin’s old map of the Lonely Mountain. Elrond also read the runes on Orcrist and Glamdring, thus identifying them. After spending a short time there, the group resumed their journey over the Misty Mountains. Although it remains uncertain whether the outcome of the war would have been altered by the loss of the Battle of Dale, its result did prevent the Easterlings from joining Sauron's already formidable forces in the South. This potential alliance could have potentially shifted the tides of war in their favor. Nonetheless, the battle also had detrimental effects, as it further depleted the dwindling population of Dwarves, ultimately leading to their extinction and the rise of Men in the Fourth Age. Boïndil Doubleblade: I haven't been offered a contract yet. Either there won't be one or it will take place without me. What was taken up in the published text was the concept of "Durin VII (and last)" who was a descendant of Dáin Ironfoot and lived sometime in the Fourth Age, which seems to indicate that at least some of the concept of the Dwarves dying out was retained.
