About this deal

There’s a twist in the tail: recent studies have found that the Brontosaurus may not be an Apatosaurus after all!

Baryonyx was a bipedal, fish-eating dinosaur that lived in the early Cretaceous Period. Its narrow, tooth-filled snout is thought to have been similar to that of today’s gharial – a fish-eating crocodilian found in Asia. Stegosaurus was a large plant-eating dinosaur in the Stegosauridae family. It roamed America during the late Jurassic period. Archaeopteryx lived in the late Jurassic Period. Animals like archaeopteryx (but possibly not archaeopteryx itself) were the ancestors of all today’s birds. Many scientists now consider birds to be dinosaurs! Theropods typically had three toes per foot & many had three fingers per hand, although there are some variations.Velociraptor Artist’s impression of a velociraptor. In reality, the velociraptor was quite a small dinosaur, and possibly had feathers.

Theropods are members of the clade Theropoda (a clade is an “evolutionary branch” of species). The majority of theropods were predatory. You can find out how to identify dinosaurs in each group below. Theropod Identification Tyrannosaurus, like most theropods, was a bipedal carnivore. Typical Characteristics of Theropods Several ankylosaurs, including the largest and best-known dinosaur in the group, Ankylosaurus, had bony tail clubs. These were likely used as a defensive weapon against predators. At the time of writing, only two Compsognathus specimens have been discovered. The first was found in Germany in the mid-nineteenth century. The second was found in France over 100 years later, in 1971.
