About this deal

During painting, the small flat edge can pry open a paint can, and the metal butt end of the handle can bang it back on. What really sets it apart is that it can clean paint from large and small roller covers, both of which are essential to big painting projects—and no other tool we found could do that. This is the only painter’s multitool that we found that cleans two sizes of roller covers, and it can also open paint cans, scrape old plaster, and crack a beer, among many other tasks.

We ended up with three for our primary testing: Hyde 17-in-1, Linzer 5600 14-in-1, and Husky 482 256 14-in-1. He lives in a very demanding 250-year-old farmhouse and spent four years gutting and rebuilding his previous home. The Hyde Tools 17-in-1 Painters Multi Tool is the perfect worksite addition for any pro – but especially for pro painters who work with spray equipment. For prep, the edge of the tool can scrape old paint and apply putty; the pointed corner can gouge out a plaster or drywall crack for repair; the center hole can pry up a nail, and the little screwdriver can remove outlet covers and pendant lighting.

The reality is that the screwdriver bits are probably the least important functions that the tool has to offer, particularly if you already own the Megapro 13-in-1 screwdriver (which we highly recommend). It accomplishes all the more common multi-tool functions (scrape flat surfaces and contours, spread putty, open out cracks, open bottles, pull nails or pound them in) but also incorporates many new ones. Hyde’s newest tool combines the company’s trademark high-quality, lightweight design with a tool that can: 1.Also, one of the other 17 uses for the Hyde is to utilize the nail set as a scribe, but there are much easier and more effective ways to do that. Each of these pieces can be inserted into the removable cap, which provides something to hold on to while you use them.

This patented multi-tool is the perfect worksite addition for any pro – but especially for pro painters who work with spray equipment. The Linzer has much of the same functionality as Hyde’s 17-in-1, but is missing the small roller cutout. Hardly a project goes by—from installing a new door (pry-bar, door stop) to building a pergola (marking the ground) to what it’s actually made for: Painting a room—that we don’t use it. For a tool that weighs less than 5 ounces and has almost no moving parts, the Hyde 17-in-1 contains a vast amount of functionality—including one key feature your typical painter’s multitool doesn’t have.Squeezing out excess paint may not seem like a big deal, but you could argue it’s this tool’s most important task, because once you start adding up the dollar value of the paint you throw away on a full roller, it’s too much to ignore. As a control unit, representative of the simpler models, we also looked at the Hyde 06986 6-in-1 Multi-Tool. This patented multi-tool is the perfect worksite addition for any pro - but especially for pro painters who work with spray equipment. Whether it’s finding great products or discovering helpful advice, we’ll help you get it right (the first time).
