A while back I purchased Genki 1, 2nd edition; however I never really got around to going through it (I blame school). Aside from money, the only other reason to go for the 2nd edition is if you are using online tools that haven’t been updated for the 3rd edition yet.

Genki is only decent for a classroom where you want lots of examples and the teacher explains it him/herself first. If you're looking to improve your Japanese skills even further, the GENKI 2: Textbook (3rd Edition) is perfect for you. The textbook is packed with useful information and interesting exercises, while the workbook is perfect for practice and review. For what it’s worth, I started on WaniKani before getting みんなの日本語 and the basic kanji and vocabulary familiarity has been an asset.Of course, being more familiar with grammar before you even start WaniKani would help you a lot if you want to read the example sentences for each item of vocabulary, so there’s no perfect timeline.
