Regarding Stephen Long's posting; I have just checked and both "Pure Effect" and "Absolute Magic" are both available from my local Public Libraray! Oh, yes, this is a provocative book indeed—and by no means do I endorse or agree with every idea proposed herein. This is the edition containing explanations of "Lift" and "Reminiscence", and I believe (although I could be wrong) that there are only about 50 copies of these in existence. Prior to the release of pure effect, and indeed for a while onwards, Derren had not come out as gay.Recently I've been reading books/essays and watching videos from a few contemporary young mentalists, and it was also interesting to see how this book seems to have influenced their approaches.

The two effects left out were indeed 'Remin-something' (can't spell it) and also 'lift', which is were you control someone else's arm and the second your's lifts up so does theres. I NEVER expect to be reading the actual truth about this or any other "career" decision made by an entertainer.Chock full of information for any serious magician or mentalist and definitely worth it if you can get your hands on a copy. I don't use any of the tricks themselves in Pure Effect (although he has some tidy pieces in there), but the way he talks about turning tricks into magic is spot on. Up until 2001, Michael was a "magician" but, in 2001, he shed the magician's cloak and donned the mentalist's mantle. That’s how he met the guy that gave him the birthday party gig that gave him the chance to go to Europe . Yes, I also own a second edition copy, it's hard cover and I never heard before about a spiral version of this book!

There is a long essay about whether or not magic is art at the end of the book which is massively thought provoking but I really don't think that it will do anything but confuse someone who has just picked up a pack of cards for the first time.I read Absolute Magic sitting by a pool in Las Vegas and then went to see a mentalism show and there were so many things in the show which were in the book as examples of horrific presentation that I almost walked out! The sales ranking of 342,754 suggests there has been a sale in the past few months, but of course there is no knowing how much the book actually went for. With flamboyant wit, Derren explains the secrets and techniques that he uses to amaze the experts, drawing from hypnotic skills and breathtaking psychological artistry.
