About this deal

This is an updated version of a book which was first published in 2009 as the 'Collins Flower Guide', which has been renamed presumably to make it clear that it is a guide to wild flowers rather than those grown in gardens!

Following on from its successful launch in 2009, "Collins Wild Flower Guide" - the ultimate reference book for wild flower enthusiasts - now enters its second edition. The text offers a complete account of over 1,900 wild flowers of Britain and Ireland, along with a summary of their European distribution. Leading botanical artists have been specially commissioned to ensure accurate, detailed illustrations.I have found the book straightforward to use and it is a good introduction to identification keys for those who have just started looking more closely at some of the plants they come across when they are out in the countryside. This is quite a thick heavy book so we usually leave this one at home for reference use rather than for field use. Following on from its successful launch in 2009, Collins Wild Flower Guide – the ultimate reference book for wild flower enthusiasts – now enters its second edition. The introduction does explain everything you need to know, and it is essential for the laymen to read it; be patient and when in doubt, use either alternate bookYouTube as a supplemental tutor for identification. Excellent book, beautifully illustrated although pictures (and book itself) are a little small, but if this were a table-sized book it would be huge, so just about right.

The effort and technical expertise given in this book is due to the valiant effort of many taxonomists, and my hat comes off! The illustrations are very detailed highlighting the salient points as are the grasses, sedges and rushes. Following on from the successful first edition of the Collins Flower Guide, this second edition has been renamed to reflect the fact that it covers wild and not cultivated plants.Comparison pages show different leaf shapes and flower clusters to enable quick and easy navigation to the right section of the book to make your identification. Birds continue to arrive in the UK from more northerly regions to spend the next few months here in our warmer winters, before. And thats just the illustrations - each section has a 'proper' key to wade through for those with detailed botanical knowledge.

A great book as are all Collin's guides and very, very reccommended for all botanists beginner or expert. This has been my main botanical reference book for 8 years of working as an ecologist, carrying out a variety of botanical surveys.

Spreads are indicated by surrounding icons representing items on the same (double page) spread in a grey box.The keys have all been improved on and updated (and in some cases rewritten entirely), making the book inherently more accessible. This book isn't just a 'look up the pictures to find your plant' book, it has a key-system that actually performs very well indeed when compared to other serious ID books - very pleasantly surprised by this book, it's beautiful and a powerful ID tool! There have been some more substantial revisions to some of the keys, presumably improvements resulting from a review or from feedback that the authors have received. Experience the joy of discovering the natural world around you with this beautiful pocket guide to British wild flowers, an inspiration and treat designed to enthral all nature lovers. Species are described and illustrated on the same page, with up-to-date authoritative text aiding identification.
