I'm not saying your theory is outside the realm of possibility, but in my own experiences with that happening it was simply sweat and oxidization combining to blacken the strings and blacken my fingertips.Also you will see this effect in unwound strings with a higher carbon content in the material's composition. I got these strings just for the black color, not really knowing what to expect in terms of sound, playability or durability, but Iwas really surprised.The original Augustine string with lower tension and a dulcet tone that evokes the sound of the old masters, now with consistently perfect tone and intonation.
