The only complaints I had about the book were more attributable to the book's editors and not the author himself. The gripping crime fiction debut from former FBI director James Comey takes readers deep inside the world of lawyers and investigators working to solve a murder while navigating the treacherous currents of modern politics and the mob. There is somehow no time for subjects or prepositions, even when a junior FBI agent is describing her Thanksgiving travel plans to her colleagues in a sit-down meeting: “Flight early tomorrow to San Fran to see my family. Bizarrely, she never seriously considers this as a reason to recuse herself from the investigation, even as her work is seriously compromised by her personal connection to the case.For whatever reason, the Manhattan DA does not want the feds affecting the sensational murder case, so it’s up to the United States Attorney team to determine if Kyra Burke is being framed even as the trial is ongoing. Benny has seen it all, once the youngest detective in NYPD history, he has dedicated much of his life to investigating and understanding Cosa Nostra. I did feel like his background allowed him to delve really deep into the underlying motivation of these investigators that we might not see from other authors. The back-and-forths also showcase the conflict among federal and state prosecutors, none of whom seem to much enjoy sharing (again, a nod, I'm sure, to reality but something I've never quite understood; if our goals are the same, why can't we all hold hands and play nice)? S. federal prosecutor, Nora Carleton, who needs to figure out the truth within a murky group of people from criminals to federal agents to the police to politicians and many others. The federal investigation forms the centerpiece of the book’s narrative, and it eventually leads to a legendary mob hitwoman who appears to have killed the former governor after disguising herself to look like Burke. I listened to this book and I felt like I was on the couch eating popcorn and watching a network tv crime drama! The novel really takes you into the complex legal system in America as well as being a thrilling novel. In addition to showing some of the the inner workings of the Southern District of New York, Comey's novel highlights the rivalry between the Manhattan D.

It won’t be long before they discover that it’s related to their own investigations, and is about to put even more strain on their already-fraught relationship with the New York District Attorney’s office. There are times early on where things feel a bit clunky, a bit too reliant on coincidence and the deus ex machina, but he quickly finds his stride and the result is a thoroughly enjoyable courtroom drama/thriller/sometimes-light-hearted buddy cop thing.
