The characterisation is excellent even those who are unlikeable are well portrayed and you gasp at some of the dialogue with the racist and sexist comments that Cleo is on the receiving end of especially in her career.

Cleo is a successful author, but the people in her life are dying the same way as the characters in her novels are. The twist didn’t make any sense and by the time it was finally revealed I had lost all interest and just wanted to get to the end as quick as possible. This is another winner from a very talented author and someone whose books I will always want to read. Never one to rest on her laurels, Dorothy Koomson really takes things to another level with My Other Husband .I won’t say any more as I don’t want to put spoilers in this review but trust me, this is such a unique story – I haven’t read a thriller with something similar, so good! Not much happens in the first half of the book and then SO MUCH happens in the last couple of chapters that it was somewhat jarring; and the end, while twisty, left me with unanswered questions. She touches on the racism that Black people still face but without making it a major plot point or using it as some kind of lesson for the characters.

There are some very dark, and in parts disturbing, aspects to the story but all done really well in a way that thoroughly hooked me. A autora vai nos dando migalhas para irmos construindo o puzzle e quando as peças estão quase todas é incrível. We spend a lot of time categorising people, while forgetting that very few of us sit in these categories neatly and stay there – we all fit into multiple categories. I did like some of the characters, especially Sidney, but felt that a good story became a little fantastical when all was said and done. There was a lot of angst and emotion in the writing and you fully felt it all - sometimes I wanted to scream at Cleo and ask her what the hell she was doing.I didn’t know what to expect from this book, I really had no clue what would happen and how it would end. Back in the present, Cleo finds herself under police scrutiny as murders start to occur that mimic the way Cleo crafted deaths for her Baking Detective series.

I was on the edge of my seat, biting my nail, troubled many times as certain revelations took place. Once I had finished this course, I was going to make sure I had all the tools to start and finish a book. We’re taken back to Cleo’s life when she first met Heath, how Trina said he was so ‘intense’ and it evolved over time that his relationship with Cleo in his mind was so magical that he had to do whatever he could to keep her in his life.

Heath is really nothing at all as we first imagine, and as his behaviour becomes increasingly out of control, and his jealousy and paranoia increases, his actions have such a profound effect on Cleo. It’s something that happens to them because it’s something that happens to Black people just trying to live their lives every day but it’s not the main plot and this is not a book about racism.

I certainly couldn’t predict how the story would eventually play out, anyway, and it constantly took me by surprise, so this was such a great reading experience for me overall. Dangerous, compelling, obsessive love mixes with murder, violence and desperation until the story comes to a head with an unexpected reveal. I was really excited about what I thought was being built up to, but it ended up going off on a completely different tangent to the one I was expecting. She always makes it clear where in the story we are though so despite the back and forth I never feel lost. I loved the alternating timelines that helped build a picture of the complex relationships between the characters over the years but out of all of them I think I loved Lola the most with her witty attitude and sass. The twists and turns as everything unfolds was second to none and every time you think you’d worked something out, you hadn’t! This was so close to being a five-star read for me but the only thing that made me drop half a star was because of how the story ended. Dorothy’s first novel, The Cupid Effect, was published in 2003 (when she was quite a bit older than 13).
