About this deal

Our current partner charities in the UK are READ International, the National Literacy Trust, Room to Read. Black romantic comedy set around the troubled "peace process" and its effect on a cynical Belfast hack. Father Flynn, a Catholic priest with the transplanted heart of a Protestant, could easily have been the focus of his own brilliant story commenting on Ireland's religious division. My nose had always been big, but it had not bent perceptibly to the left before I started going out with her.

The ending is inevitable and almost predictable, yet it's the only proper ending this story could possibly have. The Divorcing Jack of the title is a very clever twist and one I unfortunately already knew of because of the 1998 movie of the book which I remembered little of when it came to reading the novel, bar the Divorcing Jack twist. In a review for RTÉ, reviewer Tom Grealis was a little more critical of the novel, stating "plot-wise, Divorcing Jack is far from impressive. The only person who seems to be causing any trouble is Dan Starkey (Thewlis), a drunken hack who, just one hour into the movie, is left with a broken marriage, a dead body, a stripper nun (Griffiths) on his case, an IRA squad on his back, a code ("divorce.

As Dan tries to get to grips with what has become of his life, Margaret is murdered whilst he has nipped out for pizza and he becomes the focus of a man hunt, but what do Margaret's last words mean. Jason Isaacs, who, like Thewlis, has recently familiarized himself with American audiences through the Harry Potter movies, in bone-chillingly excellent in the lead villain role. As a final impression, the novel holds together well in the plot and character department, but the general vibe is of light reading, as the more serious tones (present and truly disturbing) were subverted by the need to be funny at all cost.

Divorcing Jack merges his persona-in-limbo and features him as a drunk reporter just trying to stay out of his own way.The sarcasm and fallibility of a hero doing all the wrong things for all the drunk reasons plays beautifully against the fast paced nature of this thriller. Hard to credit it, really, but Thewlis hasn't had a lead role since his Cannes-conquering turn as the poetry-spouting and blisteringly nihilistic Johnny in Mike Leigh's Naked in 1993. Publishers Weekly took a similar stance, stating "the plot machinations are formulaic", yet tempering this by stating that "what makes this tale stand out, however, is the wit and charm of its protagonist", and that "the intricate Irish politics are gracefully rendered, and Bateman's wry take on the gritty Belfast landscape adds an appealingly light touch", concluding again that "the author apparently has another Dan Starkey novel in the works; that's very good news indeed". I am already familiar with several flavors of noir : classic 1940's West Coast, East Coast, Florida camp, Scandinavian bleak, Scottish rumpus (Brookmyre). But, it would keep me from wanting to box this characters ears as I burst out laughing at his latest installment of a good idea.
