About this deal

So perceptive and wise about the media, privilege, the differing but equally troubling pressures that women of all ages face, while still being moving, laugh out loud funny, and inspiring.

After reading and completely adoring Insatiable I knew that I had to read Careering as soon as I could get my hands on it.This book revolves around the pressures, stress along with highs that Women face in the modern world and workplaces. Daisy Buchanan’s second novel follows after her debut - last year’s Insatiable - this time feeling like a far more self-assured piece of fiction that delivers a sharp and witty narrative, all with Buchanan’s trademark spice.

Harri is meant to be a well-respected old-timer in the publishing world but some of her actions (or more appropriately, inactions) reduced me to skepticism. The characters are raw, they are vulnerable, they are flawed and floundering in a world which is telling them that its all about female empowerment but quick kick you down for expressing your views. I believe that, in general, the book manages to portray in a proper way the misfortunes, problems, and barriers that we have in the current job market, especially when it comes to young women, bringing very valuable and pertinent reflections on how to deal with these issues and validating feelings that often seem to be wrong, isolated and insignificant because they are not debated in an open and welcoming way in most spaces. From laughing out loud multiple times, to really feeling the points that she was making, I was thoroughly invested and enjoyed Careering from start to finish. Especially in a particular moment when Imogen is pressured to do things that I'm sure are illegal and that unfortunately are not debated as such, just as a work “inconvenience” that soon dissipates when we know that in real life the pressures that we suffer at work can lead us to a deplorable state of mental health. She's safe there, it keeps her busy at all waking hours and leaves her little time to think of much else. Careering will strike such a chord with anyone who has ever walked to a job interview in trainers with a tote bag containing heels over their shoulder, feeling like an imposter. Her books include the novels Insatiable (longlisted for the CWIP prize) , Careering (as heard on BBC Sounds) and Limelight, and the non-fiction titles How To Be A Grown Up and The Sisterhood. All my life, I’ve worried I wasn’t pretty enough, that I wasn’t hot enough, that no men would want me. Daisy has woven an astute tale of ambition and its place in women's lives, putting words to feelings I've had for age.
