The daily brutalities that the evil and hateful guards showed the prisoners were more than anyone should be made to endure. Owen's evocative writing skills ensures you are dragged deep into the storyline seeing everything that is happening and feeling the tension and suspense throughout. In addition, some of the scenes with Damian and the business take-over were prolonged and whilst it showed a different side to the struggling Lewis, I switched off a fair amount because it was detracting from the three sisters… kind of what I was expecting this book to just be about. As this story begins, it is June of 1929 and the setting is Vranov nad Topl’ou in Slovakia where three sisters, Cibi, Magda and Livi are sitting in their backyard with their father. The rumors of guards beginning to round up young Jewish girls and boys to work for the Germans are starting to circulate the town. Stories of survival in WWII and the Holocaust are heartbreaking and inspiring and Three Sisters is no different. It shows the difficulties they face in coming to terms with what they had been through, each dealing with survivor’s guilt, Cibi losing her faith, unable to pray.The story makes clear the feelings of guilt all the survivors felt, in some way or another, for living through what so many did not. To be honest I didn’t really love the whole first half of this book - it was very bleak and didn’t seem to go anywhere so I tended to speed read a lot of it. Although the ending was very clever and unexpected, I disliked most of the characters and found the plot to be quite mundane.

When they are girls, Cibi, Magda and Livia make a promise to their father - that they will stay together, no matter what.I love reading historical fiction so that I can learn about pieces of our history through fictional, entertaining characters. It details how Cibi and Livia had to do anything they could to survive, how they were shown moments of kindness, how they’re love for each other kept them going. Their strength was amazing, especially their ability to put the needs of their sisters ahead of their own needs. Heather Morris interviewed and spent quality time with many members of the sister’s family and with each sister so that their story could be told in its entirety.

Maybe it was because my parents were never particularly interested in sharing, or because nobody else in my immediate surroundings ever voluntarily shared their past, I didn’t feel like something was amiss. Their father asked all three of his daughters when they were still young girls to promise him that they would always stay together and look out for one another. Not a single character was likable, and I have a hard time with books where I can’t find any character to like. This is one of those epic storylines that really does show how one moment in time can change so many lives!

Through the years they travel from Auschwitz, a death march, and back home to Slovakia, which is now under Communist rule. With sections divided by years rather than perspective, each sister’s point-of-view is explored in most chapters, sometimes on the same page, resulting in the “head-hopping” problem. In 1929, when the girls were very young, their father made them promise to stay together, no matter what happened.A fierce love between three sisters who would do anything for each other, who wanted to be with each other at any cost. Rich in vivid detail, and beautifully told, Three Sisters will break your heart, but leave you amazed and uplifted by the courage and fierce love of three sisters, whose promise to each other kept them alive. For me this was probably the most emotional of the series so far as the three sisters struggled to uphold the promise they made to their father as little children to always stay together. I know what it is like to love a survivor and I can relate to how their families felt about their stories being told.
