Description

An Atlas of Endangered Animals' is a beautifully illustrated, fascinating and important document of an incredible world at risk, and, just maybe, a handbook for restoring it. Drawing from the testimony of scientists, conservationists and rangers, this beautiful and important volume explores the countless extraordinary species facing extinction and maps a hopeful path to changing our perception and appreciation of the natural world. With a third mass extinction on our doorstep, it's also very timely, and I'm delighted to see that it's been written by one of the foremost of the generation of new, young naturalists that are helping to change our perception and appreciation of the natural world. A really brilliant insight into an array of endangered species with a fantastic mix of facts and real life experiences. This book takes just 20 of these amazing creatures, from the 'celebrities' of the red list – the tigers, the northern white rhino, the kakapo – to the lesser-known, and sometimes lesser loved ones, and paints a portrait of them, their world, and the people trying to protect them. Pretty sound balance in coupling her own experiences with the essential facts for each of the species that are covered.Packed full of wonderful pictures and deep insights into the lives of the beautiful plants and creatures the planet is in grave danger of losing - don't miss this book! Also included is one plant species, an orchid, making me aware of the practice of plant poaching, which is making many species of plant similarly in danger of extinction.

A keen photographer, in 2019 she was appointed as the coordinator and judge of Young Bird Photographer of the Year. She most recently presented Springwatch, alongside Chris Packham, and is the founder of The Self-Isolating Bird Club on twitter, and co-founder of Wildlife Rebellion. An Atlas of Endangered Animals is a beautifully illustrated, fascinating and important document of an incredible world at risk, and, just maybe, a handbook for restoring it. There are currently 41,415 listed endangered vertebrate species, and over 16,000 of them are threatened with extinction. She most recently presented Winterwatch alongside Chris Packham, is the founder of The Self-Isolating Bird Club on Twitter, and co-founder of Wildlife Rebellion. An Atlas of Endangered Species shows us that the battle is on for their survival - and we all have a part to play. Most well-known for presenting the BAFTA award-winning BBC Springwatch series and Animal Park , Megan is a passionate science communicator and biodiversity activist. Vividly presented through full-colour maps and graphics, this fully revised and updated atlas profiles species lost, threatened and surviving today. Beautifully written, capturing the wonder and personality of each creature, big and small perfectly.

I thought the book is well made its lovely, its nicely presented with further details on the subject and with the added Megan's experiences etc. I listened so I didn't see the dyslexia friendly version of the book but I thought this was brilliant, something that had never occurred to me. Much like her presenting style, Megan McCubbin's writing has an effortless appeal to a diverse audience, from the curious child to the most seasoned of conservationists. Sharks can navigate the ocean using electromagnetic fields; sloths use algae as camouflage; albatross can fly for hours without beating their wings; and orca pods each have unique cultures and languages. The diversity of life on earth is astounding, with each species perfectly adapted to its environment. As well as some of the well known species that are teetering on the edge of the abyss that is extinction, she also covers some lesser known species. Megan's enthusiasm for biodiversity and passion to save endangered species from extinction shines throughout. Although the book was excellent I found myself feeling a bit doom and gloom after reading it, especially as I finished it a day after the UK PM pushing back on some of the UK green commitments. Her interest stems from a childhood growing up in and around the Isle of Wight Zoo, which specialises in the rescue and rehabilitation of ex-circus and pet trade animals.
