The Duschessa herself is a mysterious but very dark presence throughout the book and I was terrified to meet her. Many of the other characters were intriguing, but this is where I felt that the length of the story fell short: they felt somewhat underdeveloped, and if the book had been longer their motives could have been made much clearer.
