About this deal
We don't get to learn that much about the characters, so they are likable but I didn't really feel connected with ony of them. A story about a relatable, insecure teenaged black girl who lives in London combined with my (almost) snobby knowledge of and love for Greek mythology. Why not one of those obsessive-compulsive, needy women who would actually move halfway across the world with a man they’ve known for six days and claim it’s love?
Her mom actually lays this news on Phoebe after she wins a race at the end of a running camp (good timing, no? This story follows half mortal Helen, daughter of Zeus, thrown into a house with Gods whilst trying to live an ordinary life. Phoebe is whisked away to Serfopoula, a tiny island in Greece no one's ever heard of, when her mother decides to marry again. The Gods have not been seen or heard from in over a thousand years they say, but apparently they are still getting busy with the common folk and producing heirs?
Childs has certainly jumped on the Percy Jackson bandwagon here but it doesn't hold a candle next to other authors on the wagon such as Meg Cabot and Josephine Angelini. I also found that there wasn't much of a plot, most of the story revolves around Phoebe and Griffin's budding relationship and Phoebe training hard to place in the race, so that she can be on The Academy's track team. At first Phoebe thinks he and her mother have lost their minds, but when her new evil stepsister materializes on the boat as they approach the island, she has no choice but to accept the news. Walau benci tinggal berjauhan dengan sahabat-sahabatnya, tapi hal itu sedikit terobati dengan adanya perlombaan lari lintas alam yang diikuti Phoebe.
To make matters worse, Aphrodite and her brother, Apollo, aren’t very good at keeping a low profile.
