Evenson later collaborated on the series again with Dead Space: Catalyst, a second prequel novel set during the period of experimentation with the Markers. It's disgusting, it's creepy, it's terrifying in its singular focus, it's pure Dead Space, and the rest of the book-- including a predictable massacre towards the end-- is a letdown in comparison to this stunning section. Harman meets up with and follows behind Altman like a slave, repeatedly saying " Altman be praised" (much to the latter's distaste) while Altman tries to figure out what the Marker is all about. After a Necromorph body washes up on a Mexican beach near the Chicxulub crater area, the local inhabitants burn the corpse, though a local named Chava finds his wise woman dead from suicide afterwards. Upon my manly crying, and sobbing, it suddenly came to me that this monstah also similar to a certain horror fps game monsters, which I don’t quite remember.

Instead, Markoff and his evil psychiatrist buddy Stevens imprison Altman for a period of time before literally sitting him down at a table and doing their best Bond villain impression as they explain how they are going to invent the legend of Altman as the founder of the Church.Altman is forced to help in the recovery of the bathyscaphe after one of the original pilots dies in mysterious circumstances.

When playing the game I found that the atmospherics played a massive part in bringing fear to the player. However, in Martyr, after Altman shows the Marker that he knows how to replicate it and causes it to fall silent and stop broadcasting its signal, the Necromorphs in the floating compound are still active and attempt to kill him. Despite Altman clearing Hendricks as perfectly mentally stable, so they are quite confident the misfortune of the previous sub will not repeat, Hendricks cracks and tries to kill Altman.
