Detailed lessons include firemaking, manufacturing your own tools and gear, foraging, and trapping and processing game. Dave Canterbury is an American bushcraft and survival instructor who is best known for, among other things, the Pathfinder Bushcraft School and Self Reliance Outfitters, his partnership with the knife maker Morakniv and his appearance on TV shows such as Dual Survival. As the sections suggest, the first part is all about the kit you need and how to use it, covering topics like what sort of pack to choose and how to carry it. This book was a New York Times Best Seller when it published, showing the popularity of the subject and the book.

This is just the sort of read you need if you are planning a back country trip as it will help prepare you for all sorts of eventualities. If you already have a decent amount of experience in the woods, I would check out the sequel to this book; Advanced Bushcraft. I would highly recommend this book for those that are getting started in traditional bushcraft skills or looking to simplify their kit for short adventures and stays in the woods.

Based on the 5Cs of Survivability: cutting tools, covering, combustion devices, containers, and cordages. The whole book is packed full of tips and tricks that are clearly born out of a lot of real-world experience. This is much less relevant for the UK and European settings as the majority of the trapping devices and techniques mentioned are either highly discouraged or downright illegal. Dave begins the book by laying out his unique approach to tools and equipment – the 5 Cs – the items that are difficult and/or time consuming to produce from natural resources on a trip. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.Bushcraft 101 gets you ready for your next backcountry trip with advice on making the most of your time outdoors. For reading this, for the obvious Internet use, my spare "Pebble Charger" which charges my tablet 2x. Compared to the SAS book that can fit into a pocket, this is inferior in quality of information, but if it's the only book on this subject you have, it has the information that will aid a person that lacks these basic outdoor skills. It covers the basics well, although there are several times when the book tells you about a device, like a trap, but doesn't tell you how to make it. This valuable guide offers only the most important survival skills to help you craft resources from your surroundings and truly experience the beauty and thrill of the wilderness.
