The album was recorded and produced by the band at Strawberry Studios in 1974 with Eric Stewart engineering and mixing.

This album reveals a group at the top of their game, confident with their material, willing to take risks and totally assured in their use of the studio as an instrument. If anything, this band's cleverness at songwriting, multi-instrumental prowess and willingness to take risks with their use of instruments and production techniques on this album showed that at this point, they had moved so far beyond the level of routinely good pop groups. Also containing the hit single Life Is A Minestrone, the album opens with the infuential nine-minute mini-opera, Un Nuit A Paris, demonstrating how far pop music had travelled in a short space of time. Many of the tracks feature highs that are recorded with a great deal of clarity which I found quite pleasant. The group's signature song – played over five million times on US radio – was one of many riches on their eagerly anticipated 1975 album, The Original Soundtrack. This is the album they had been working hard to achieve - their third one in fact,and they certainly hit gold with it.They were truly 'too clever by half' and if you embraced this cleverness and its wit (as many but evidently not most did), you loved this group and particularly adored this album. From cod vaudeville meets mini rock opera with jokes galore, to pop, rock, ballad and even cheesy Hollywood schmooze. On the strength of that one song, we did a five-year deal with them for five albums and they paid us a serious amount of money.
