This next venture into the Slough House realm, which consists of misfits/failures/alcoholics of the MI5 calibre, was a busy one. Led from behind by the frequently gross Jackson Lamb they nevertheless benefit from his years of experience, years that have almost - but not entirely - broken his spirit.

But I went ahead and finished all seven novels in the Slough House series before backtracking to review this one. Lamb meets with an old associate, Sam Chapman, and establishes that Donovan is employed by a private security firm.

Dickie became aware of action: an announcement about buses had been made, and everyone was trying to cross the bridge. On Dickie's phone Lamb finds the last message he ever left, which hints that an old-time Moscow-style op is being run in the Intelligence Service's back-yard. Usually by this time, just after six thirty, all sharp edges would have been smoothed away: he’d have been up since twelve, after five hours’ stormy shut-eye.

The second in the Slough House series, it paints a story where an old Cold War spy turns up dead on a bus and Jackson Lamb suspects that he was murdered. She loses him during a chase through the city before exchanging the file (labelled 'Footprint') with an unknown man. When Dickie Bow dies at the back of a bus, everyone assumes the old alcoholic shuffled off this mortal coil naturally.

This was met with a communal groan of disgust, and not a little swearing, but most impressively to Dickie Bow, immediate readiness. As the agents dig into their fallen comrade's circumstances, they uncover a shadowy tangle of ancient Cold War secrets that seem to lead back to a man named Alexander Popov, who is either a Soviet bogeyman or the most dangerous man in the world. Meanwhile, Guy continues to investigate the cafe's surroundings and links an abandoned car to Donovan. Chernitsky ambushes Ho on the train but, after Dander boards the train and helps fight him, escapes.

Rubbing his thumb on its numberpad, he registered the tiny nipple on the middle button that allowed you to orient your fingers in the dark. These agents all failed in previous missions and are a dumping ground of miscreants, the 'Slow Horses' are involved with the Russians this time.The clues point to a Russian spy “legend” who inspired stories but was never thought to truly exist, Alexander Popov. Webb reveals his planned meet with Pashkin to Taverner, who reluctantly approves despite the UK's agreement with Moscow to keep intelligence operatives away from Nevsky, a critic of the Russian government.
