On summer weekends, families feast outside on simple crowd-pleasers like pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven, homemade burgers and barbecues on open fires. At Coot Club, the world slows to the beat of simple pleasures: birdsong at first light, the warmth of the sun after a bracing swim. Postcard views are best enjoyed while lolling about in your bed … then again, there is so much to do here.

There is satisfactory realism about all that happens to the Coot Club, and the atmosphere and detail of the odd part of England where they navigate are conveyed with a charm and accuracy that only this author perhaps could bring to bear. Décor throughout features local artists such as Michael Chandler, Gemma Orkin, Lucy de Moyencourt and Lisa Ringworth. There are also wide beam narrowboats on some waterways, and in France some of these have wheel steering, as do French barges.A light lunch (burgers, salads, fish, steak, sandwiches) is available from 12pm– in the summer best enjoyed under the milkwoods, with those marvelous views. Perhaps more so the Lakeland group than these Coots, but Ransome's game was always to blend children's make-believe so seamlessly with reality that there is no line.
