About this deal

The pair had abducted the real Jason as a baby, so they could harvest his organs, and save their ill son. When their visits are discovered, Andy's father, Richard ( Michael Shannon), is initially fine with the visits, but Katherine is having none of it and her behavior grows increasingly erratic. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

It is disclosed that the heart transplant, that is about to take place, is for the real Andy, Katherine and Richard's biological son. There was just one guy, a wonderful man named Gerry Kessler who died since the movie was completed, who wrote one check out of his own pocket, for 6,5 million dollars. In her new neighbourhood, she befriends Andy (Charlie Tahan), the boy next door, whose parents keep him confined to their house due to his serious illness. I can see the reason for that but actually it is quite different as you'll see from the twist at the end (which I did see coming but was still a fantastic idea). There are a lot of complex themes here and they are touched upon carefully, the direction is intelligent and clear; we never truly believe that Kathleen is entirely evil and you should be able to offer her up some sympathy. I WAS ACTUALLY STUNNED by some of the poorer reviews, but if they were based on the premise this was a horror I can almost understand, as although there are truly horrible / horrendous aspects to the narrative, it is a THRILLER. Whether it be Richard, who can’t escape his unhappy marriage and controlling wife, or Andy who literally can’t escape from his wheelchair, there is a definite exploration of what it means to be stuck in a situation. As their friendship begins to evolve, Maryann tries to come to terms with why Andy's mother doesn't like her and doesn't want her there.

Less so a horror and more a thriller, Can’t Come Out To Play plays on fears of claustrophobia and being incarcerated. As the mother, Kathleen’s only desire and drive comes from treating her ill son, and without that, she will lose her identity. The most terrifying aspect of the film comes from this harrowing performance by Samantha Morton, who plays the doting, loving and obsessive mother. Katherine, who had caught up to Jason and Maryann, is informed via her pager that her son's ventilator has been unplugged, and runs back to the house.

The movie had its world premiere on October 19, 2013, at the Chicago International Film Festival and follows a young girl ( Natasha Calis) who befriends a seemingly lonely and confined boy her own age, only to fall afoul of his mother. This is clearly NOT for the less CONTEMPLATIVE VIEWER, as evidenced by the baffling reviews perceiving it as slow. The film is directed by John McNaughton and features acclaimed actor Peter Fonda ( Easy Rider) as Maryann's grandfather.
