About this deal

It comes as little surprise that Kevin Rowland made this record one of his key texts during one of the most intense phases of Dexys Midnight Runners. For example, drummer James Gadson locks Kissing My Love into a killer shuffle before Benorce Blackmon’s heavily wah wah’ed guitar weaves its understated magic. Comes in a normal plastic wrap (as opposed to a plastic shrink-wrap) with a black Music On Vinyl sticker, mentioning "exclusively remastered" and "180 gram audiophile vinyl pressing". In fact, it takes several spins of the album to realize just how versatile Withers is on Still Bill , to hear how he makes intricate, funky rhythms sound as effortless and simple as the album's best-known song, the gospel-tinged inspirational anthem "Lean On Me". No track better exemplifies those principles than “Lean on Me,” a feel-good paean to brotherhood and community that hit No.

Withers’ balanced outlook on human desires, needs, and situations stem from his own existence as a former blue-collar employee who believed his time as a musician would soon end. EDIT: have to agree with some of the other reviewers that Bill's voice, at times, sounds like it is on the verge of distortion. Still Bill boasts the classic Bill Withers sound: warm and easily accessible, with a depth and complexity that reveals itself over numerous plays. After 'Just As I Am' (MOVLP378) Music On Vinyl is proud to present the next gem of Bill Withers 'Still Bill'. Some time ago, Deep Discount had a blowout on the European only Bill Withers - The Complete Sussex and Columbia Albums box. Writing for Rolling Stone in 1972, Vince Aletti regarded it as an improvement over Withers' debut album Just as I Am, particularly because of the singer's production, which sustains even the less exceptional songs here. On Still Bill, his second album, Withers holds forth on all aspects of love, on its wonders; on Kissing My Love, he talks of closing his eyes and seeing a pretty city with a million flowers. On September 7, 1972, the album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), having recorded at least 500,000 copies sold.

Then there's the quality of the songwriting, which is as assured on the grooving "Lonely Town, Lonely Street" as it is on the suspicious, paranoid "Who Is He (And What Is He to You)? To my ears there is a bit of a dip on side B but its still very good quality gear, and 'still bill' is probably a bit tighter than the debut overall. These characteristics – along with Withers' strong singing, hybrid arrangements, and deceptively simple songwriting – have allowed the album to endure to the point where it sounds as fresh today as in 1972.

I don’t understand some of the negative feedback Chalkys get - I have never had any problem and would absolutely recommend them.
