Description

You should always consider wearing a mask while working on projects that would involve plaster dust. Similar to how you would clear your throat before a speech or a phone call, make sure to clear your lungs this way after inhaling dust. Obviously, if you keep 'working' it - moving it around, squashing it, etc - after it's began it's permanent setting, then its strength will be compromised.

Plaster is a building material used for the protective or decorative coating of walls and ceilings and for moulding and casting decorative elements. [1] In English, "plaster" usually means a material used for the interiors of buildings, while "render" commonly refers to external applications. [2] The term stucco refers to plasterwork that is worked in some way to produce relief decoration, rather than flat surfaces. Some people have had success with drinking water and also showering after working with plaster dust. This section does not cite any sources. If you are a person who is working with gypsum day in and day out, chances are you could have long-term effects on your lungs. Again, you can avoid this by wearing the proper personal protective equipment and limiting your exposure.

Gypsum plaster, gypsum powder, or plaster of Paris, is produced by heating gypsum to about 120–180 °C (248–356 °F) in a kiln: [18] [13] CaSO 4 ⋅ 2 H 2 O ⟶ heat CaSO 4 ⋅ 1 2 H 2 O + 1 1 2 H 2 O ↑ {\displaystyle {\ce {CaSO4.2H2O {\overset {heat}{{}->{}}}{CaSO4.1/2H2O}+ 1\!1/2 H2O If you do not prepare yourself with a mask and proper ventilation, over time, you will experience some terrible irritation.

As long as you got it on and smoothed orf before it fully set, then you should be ok. And it sounds as tho' you have Gypsum is one of the components in plaster dust, and it is the one which can cause the most irritation for people. Mixed up fine, lovely and creamy, no lumps. Skimmed over bonding but plaster was firming up within 5 minutes. Just before it set I polished it with a damp float and it looks good and smooth. Plaster felt warm and was fully set in around 10 mins The best way to avoid having issues with plaster dust is to wear a mask when you are working with it. If you don’t have a sander with a vacuum attachment, you can still stand by with your regular work vacuum and try and grab as much out of the air as you can.

Wouldn't attempt to use for a larger area due to speed of set but then again, I wouldn't attempt to plaster a larger area as I know my limitations and wouldn't be happy with the finishSome people who are exposed to plaster dust will have no issues at all, while others will be highly irritated by it. Masks will help protect you from any of the unknowns that you can come across when working on your home.

If you happen to do a simple at-home project that causes you to breathe in a bit of gypsum dust, you may cough and feel irritated, but it would be unlikely for you to have any long-term lung issues from this one instance.
