Description

Self awareness: Recognising the supporters own mental wellbeing, making sure they have enough resilience of their own to cope with looking after someone else.

Launching on Thursday 9th November, the café will run on the second Thursday of every month from 6.30-8pm and will be open to everyone. Mind Your Head was created in 2005 following the personal experiences of its founding members. The first money was received from the funeral of a family member who died by suicide in 2004, after many years of suffering from mental health problems. The Wellness Together Programme is a 6-8 week individual service for those who are supporting, living with, or caring for someone who is struggling with their mental health. You don't have to be a carer to access the Wellness Together Programme. You could be a partner, a parent, a professional, a family member, or even a friend. Worked with Farm Safety Foundation who ran a campaign called Mind Your Head aimed at famers to encourage them to look after themselves and take some time out of their busy schedule and focus on self-care. Collaborated with Shetland Islands Council Youth Services to develop and deliver a self-care session to 1400 secondary school studentsThe Mix: Provides free, confidential support for young people under 25 via online, social and mobile. Once we have accepted you into the service we will plan your first support session with your practitioner within the next 5 working days (unless we are currently have a waiting list). Your initial assessment on the WEMWBS will be used to develop a support plan, identifying individual person-centred goals; activities will be identified on how to achieve these goals. Mind Your Head became formally constituted in January 2006 and in June 2007 became a registered charity with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator. In 2017 we became a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO). https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/types-of-mental-health-problems/depression/about-depression They are being supported in this venture by Amanda Tait from Coffee and Keetchin, who is offering her premises as a venue for the café. Mind Your Head and VAS see the Wellness Café as an opportunity to meet new people and start new conversations, which is a key factor in promoting good mental wellbeing.

The aim of the service is to improve the mental wellbeing and resilience of people living in Shetland who are experiencing low-level mental illness. What can you expect from us? If you are a young person and are worried about your own mental health or the mental health of someone you know, here's how we can help. Well Youth is Mind Your Head's most recently launched service. We offer the following services for free:

Grubby Hut Sessions: Staff visit businesses and workplaces to talk to employees about the importance of looking after not only their own mental health, but that of their colleagues' as well.Support Sessions: One-to-one support sessions offering guided self-help techniques/coping strategies. You don't have to be an expert on mental health to talk to someone. Just asking someone how they are can make a big difference. Allowing someone to to talk about things can mean a lot, especially if they have felt they had nobody to talk to. Just knowing you are thinking about them, and that you care, can be a big help. By listening and being supportive they may feel able to open up, and if need be get help. It might not happed straight away, so try not to focus on their feelings too much, just talking about everyday things will help the person to feel normal too. Opening up for the first time about feelings or things that worry us can be a scary thing to do, so be patient.

It is often our personal hunches that makes us aware that someone we know might be struggling, even if they say they are fine. In that situation what can you do? Our first fundraising event was the Round Spiggie Fun Run and Walk which took place in August 2005. Entrants were able to walk or run a 5k or 10k route around the beautiful Spiggie Loch in South Mainland, Shetland. Due to the success of this event, we decided to hold it as our annual fundraising event. The event has grown significantly over the years and in 2013, more than 600 people took part. Of equal importance to the funds raised is the statement that the event makes about mental health, where people are becoming more open about their personal situation and others less frightened by the taboo of mental health. Milestones The Wellness Together Programme (WTP) is a short-term service of around 6-8 weeks and is open to anyone aged 18 and over, is free and confidential. The person that you are supporting does not need to have a diagnosis. The programme offers support for up to three months on individual basis and is delivered in a variety of settings, and at intervals that meet the individual’s needs. If you think your friend or loved one needs to speak to a professional, then encourage and support them as much as you can to take that first difficult step. Taking those first steps is going to be really hard, so if they are worried and unsure, offer to be with them when they make the phone call, or why not go with them to their appointment? Just knowing they have your support and understanding will be a huge support. Suicide Prevention You have been advised to avoid bright light or are taking medication that make cause photo-sensitivity
