First, your eye can’t take 15 second exposures, so even bright objects like the Hercules Cluster look like milky, faint cotton balls and colorful objects like the Orion Nebula look like milky, faint wedges. This simply means that the telescope is a little too heavy for the tracking mount that is supplied with it, and I would have to agree with this. The mount head unit and fork arm have a plastic outer casing, reminding you that this is a budget-friendly GoTo telescope package. Initial setup aligning finder scope with the telescope was fairly simple once tripod was adjusted to suitable height. Using this method (eyepiece projection astrophotography), you can capture impressive images of the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, and even Mars.

I used an AC adapter to plug the mount into household power in the backyard, but this mount can also be powered via 8 x AA batteries for complete mobility. But, people have taken impressive images with this telescope, it just requires a different approach. In the 360-photo sequence of the Orion Nebula, below, you can see the nebula drift up and then back down. Amazing bit of kit, finds objects well, tracks well, definitely worth making the jump from 4inch to 8inch, can definitely see more! I asked the AstroBackyard community on Facebook how they felt, and almost all of them had amazing things to say about this telescope.I should note that the 8SE’s alt-az mount is rated for 11 lbs, and the 8SE OTA weighs 11 pounds, so piggybacking anything puts you over the mount’s payload. It’s a visual telescope (not designed for astrophotography), but photos of bright objects like the Moon and planets are possible through the eyepiece. If you’re interested in astroimaging, the NexStar SE is Fastar-compatible for ultra-fast, wide field imaging.

If you are willing to give up the GoTo functionality and portability of this computerized telescope, you can purchase a Dobsonian telescope with more light-gathering power than the NexStar 8SE. A serious large aperture telescope in a portable user friendly format with real upgrade options to grow with you, add GPS, WiFi, StarSense and the Equatorial wedge for long exposure astrophotography. Planets are so bright that the best way to photograph them is to take a video and feed the video into the stacking software. Your first night as an 8SE owner will be so much more rewarding if you’ve got your power source sorted! However, I do not recommend mounting any other telescope on the NexStar 8SE base due to its weight limitations and shallow profile. The downside of an alt-az is that they struggle to track objects accurately enough for astrophotography. Clifton Cameras is a credit broker, not a lender and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN728300). The simplest way to get started is to use your existing smartphone and hold it up to the eyepiece of the telescope. But if you want to photograph dim things, you want a telescope with a fast focal ratio, since focal ratio affects exposure time.

What is the heaviest recommended load for mounting a camera in the Fastar / HyperStar configuration? Frank, we are getting started, but I would like to be able to view more objects well than just a few planets, Andromeda, etc. A second arm attached at the other side would give a more robust mounting and, without it, you do see some minor vibration at the eyepiece when you touch the scope, such as when adjusting focus. If you envision a time lapse with star trails spinning around Polaris, the ones closest trace small arcs and the furthest large. This innovative software solves the time-consuming problem of trying to pinpoint the North Celestial Pole. The imaginary arrow coming off the top of your hand rotates with it and is now pointing to the right.

The telescope does experience image shift (a common occurrence on an SCT), but it is not serious enough to take away from the visual experience. However, despite many, many complaints, Celestron still doesn’t package the NexStar range with any power cable. To really enjoy using this high-magnification telescope, do yourself a favor and pick up a nice wide-field eyepiece. If there are other issues, like the red-green-blue channels being misaligned due to aberrations, you align them to fix the color. During sub-freezing January nights, you will appreciate turning it on, going inside and getting a cup of tea, and coming back out to have the telescope all setup and ready to go.The electronics of your camera produce inherent noise in the sensor, which shows up in the bias photos. This nighttime photo is a single picture, so you can fit the entire moon in frame with the focal reducer. The Starpointer finderscope is a weak, red-dot affair that only passes muster because you’ll almost exclusively rely on the computer to locate objects once you’re set up. The Nexstar 8SE will perfectly track Saturn across the sky, keeping it centered in frame, but, like the arrow, Saturn’s rings will start pointing up at 45 degrees, flatten, and then point down over time.
