The Little Gem is run by Ollie Aubrey, who is also in charge at the Walnut Tree in Maidstone - another new pub to have made the guide this year. The Good Beer Guide has always had an important role in acting as a barometer of the beer and pub industry. We believe information gleaned from the Guide is absolutely vital in the drive to save our pubs from closure and campaign for policies that better support pubs, local brewers and their customers.

The Ship in Conyer, near Teynham Wetherspoon's Eight Bells in Dover is part of the old Metropole Hotel The latest edition of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide has been published, with 28 Kent pubs making the list for the first time.

With 4500 pubs, bars, and clubs selected by unpaid volunteers up and down the country, this is the best guide for pubgoers interested in being served a good pint of real ale as well as those who wish to find a local near them that is welcoming and has many other benefits that may appeal. Each of the pubs always offers customers an excellent choice of real ales, including those from local and regional brewers, as well as hosting its own beer festival. Every beer has a story to tell, and every Pub ……well…if the walls could speak- what dramas have unfolded under the oak beamed roofs?

The Good Beer Guide is a book published annually by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) listing what it considers to be the best 4,500 real ale outlets ( pubs, clubs, and off-licences) in the United Kingdom. [1] Details [ edit ] First edition in 1974 CAMRA national chairman Nik Antona said: "For nearly five decades, the Good Beer Guide has been a comprehensive guide to the UK’s breweries, their ales, and the best outlets to find them in across the country. An entry in the definitive beer drinkers guide doesn't do any harm at all and helps to pull punters in from other areas, who join the regulars whose ages range from early 20s right up to their 80s. Teresa said: "I love it - it can be hard work at times. We put theirs on and sometimes it will go in one night and the same with Oakham, it's a very popular beer for us, but they like Bristol Beer Factory and Twisted Wheel. It's giving people a choice really." These pubs only offered mild and bitter in draught form, although the quality in the selected pubs was exceptionally good. Nowadays the pubs listed in the guide, and many others, tend to offer a wide range of quality cask beers in numerous styles and from microbreweries near and far.Among the new pubs added are the Little Gem in Aylesford, which reopened in July last year after being closed for a decade. Small, but beautifully formed, The Little Gem on Aylesford High Street has been lovingly restored to its former glory by the Goachers family The family-run pub opened in April last year on Rochester High Street, selling Austrian and Kent beers to reflect the owners’ heritage. Entries for each venue give details on factual information such as opening times, food availability and accessibility of the property, as well as subjective information such as the attractiveness of the wallpaper and the welcome visitors are likely to get from the bar staff.

Volunteers then rate the pubs based on their quality of beer, atmosphere, location and ability to accommodate real ale drinkers. This guide is a clarion call to get involved, to go local, to preserve humanity and courtesy in our Pubs, not have them turned into mere alcohol cash machines.’ There has been a significant change to the format for this edition. It is now split into regions, with an introduction to each section from Laura Hadland, the author of 50 Years of CAMRA, and the brewery information is now split regionally and follows the pub section. It is hoped that this arrangement will make the GBG more user-friendly and accessible. The GBG remains the UK’s definitive guide to pubs that serve top quality real ale, with entries chosen by CAMRA volunteers, with no fees paid (or asked for) for inclusion. Although laid out differently, the unique listing of breweries is still included.
