I wish I’d noted early days’ when I opened my bottles…. Only began doing it late 2020. I remember having this mid 2019 and being impressed. What springs to mind is there was a brief sharpness… yes… salt…smoke of course… minimal iodine. … I couldn’t express my thoughts at the time… Graham and herbal notes…. and citrus…. I wanted to state this under a separate headline. Bruichladdich offers three different styles. Unpeated Laddie, heavily peated Port Charlotte and super heavily peated Octomore. Unlike the numbers we see on Octomore (which is 80+ ppm), Port Charlotte 10 Year Old is at 40 ppm. Being Heavily Peated

Say hello to the final Scotch in our peated Bruichladdich run: Port Charlotte 10 Years. I did a PC10 review a few years ago, but I wanted to see if more than the bottle got a facelift. And, spoiler, it did. But that’s to be expected with a distillery whose goal is flavor, not consistency.

From 1855 the distillery was operated by John B Sheriff of Glasgow [7] and from 1895 J.B. Sherrif & Co Ltd until 1921. In 1921 it was acquired by Benmore Distilleries Limited which was taken over in 1929 by the Distillery Company Ltd. This resulted in the closure of the distillery. [8] Scotch Bankrupts". Port Charlotte whisky gets its name from the village of Port Charlotte, a white-walled and windswept sort of place just a couple of kilometers down the road from Bruichladdich. This release, Port Charlotte 10, is distilled from 100% Scottish barley peated to 40 ppm. Ppm stands for parts per million phenol, a common method for for gauging the smokiness of malted barley that isn’t always useful for consumers. The distillate ages at least 10 years on Islay in a mix of first- and second-fill American whiskey casks, and second-fill French wine casks. It’s bottled at 50% ABV and, like all of Bruichladdich’s whiskies, without coloring or chill filtration. As Simon Coughlin, CEO of International Single Malt Whisky at Remy Cointreau states, Bruichladdich gives a huge emphasis on being from Islay. From people working at the distillery to the barley used, you can easily see how important being from Islay is. Port Charlotte is a lovely village to holiday in as it has plenty to offer. The village has maintained a lot of its character although the area around the pier nowadays are mostly holiday lets. The views from several parts of the village over Loch Indaal are stunning. Take for instance the view down from School Street, or the view ahead when you enter the village. Bruichladdich is a bit unique in that there is no prescribed recipe for each release, no single way they have to make any given label. Instead, they distill, age and blend to make the best whisky they can from any given vintage or age range and their best result gets put out. A, slightly, inconsistent profile that’s consistently good. For anyone interested in the local flora and fauna, which is a LOT, a visit to the Islay Nature Centre is a must. They hold a large collection of books, have displays of local wildlife and there is a hands on section for the younger visitors to get close to some of the local wildlife. The folk from the nature centre also organise walks to various parts of the island during the season.
