Now this is in the blurb right but somewhere in the middle of the story, it’s like the plot is not progressing. There was very little that had happened and as far as being 'spectacularly funny' as advertised, I'd laughed maybe once. Only one of them is on goodreads so Randi, if you're reading this, I'll try to be a little nicer in the meeting but here I'm going to be brutally honest. Each chapter is narrated by a different voice, telling the story of a modern family, all living in their own separate bubbles, lurching towards meltdown. He heads an exclusive club at school that idolises Audrey Hepburn, Peter Andre and develops a crush on his mother’s newest antipodean intern.

It is done in the style of a diary entry type book, but with no dates, just different chapters for each member of the household. It could easily be condensed into half it's size by narrowing the margins and reducing the font size, (hello? Mo's story is the driving force behind the plot, but with it we are allowed to revel in the day-to-day activities of her children. It’s hard to really pinpoint Dora’s story, apart from it perhaps being one of simple teenage life in all its hideousness and melodrama. Mo laughingly ignores these, passing Dora's atrocious behaviour off as a teenage phase, because after all, Mo is a psychologist and no one can tell HER how the young mind works! Mo/s Mother, the Grandma who's deep insight is matched by a remarkable ability to bake the right cake for the right person (reminded me of Joanne Harris's 'Chocolat!

There’s seventeen-year-old Dora, a stroppy teenager who’s just come out of her first relationship (it lasted a whole six weeks) and who’s longing to escape to university; her long-suffering mother, Mo, a child psychiatrist who’s baffled by the antagonist behaviour of her children; and sixteen-year-old Peter, who prefers to be known as Oscar due to his obsession with Oscar Wilde.I enjoyed the way in which she explores the three main characters; Mo, her eighhteen year old daughter Dorra and sixteen year old son Peter. Their relationships with each other which can be warm, loving, frustrating, funny, annoying and angry either separately or all at once is typical of family confined to sharing the same living space.
